XLH1 Servicing

Are there any good alternatives to packing up my XLH1 and shipping it off to Canon for servicing? I did that back in the day with my old XL1, but I have not had my XLH1 serviced since purchasing it in December 2005. It gets light usage--maybe 18 hours per year. I occasionally run a cleaning tape (once a year?). It's still performing well. I have had a couple of instances while recording audio only for voice-overs where about five seconds of tape is blank, but I suspect it's the tape. Around here we say "If it ain't broke don't fix it." But I don't want to be on an important assignment when it decides to go squirrelly.
Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The generally accepted guideline is to have it serviced by Canon USA at least
once per year. There is no viable alternative other than not doing it at all.

That's what I thought. Thanks, Chris.

My one experience with Canon Service (Irvine, CA location) was excellent. Firewire port was found to have been damaged by bad cable provided with Firestore FCS drive. Very fast. I would never hesitate to use them again.

Hi Folks

Up here in Canada, the main service center that does major repairs is in Toronto, Ontario.

What I did with my ole XL1 was to bring it to my local Canon service center in Montreal. They would then pack and ship it via their own internal carrier to Toronto for repairs.

You can try that approach if you have a local Canon service center nearby.

Regards
