HD-SDI out - now what?
 

Seems this is the hottest feature of this camera.
Not too thrilled with 15GOP HDV 4:2:0 native data. So to make it worthwhile the other featureset should matchup.

Costwise what does it really take to get uncompressed HD 4:2:2 data out ?

As that is truly the cost of the camera.

Canon = $9K + (cost of HD-SDI) output = ?
Pana = $6K + 2K Firestore/P2 = $8,000
JVC = $6K = $6K

Whatever deck rental cost per day or 3-day week is.

You don't buy HD decks, you rent them as you need them.

And once you've got the uncompressed video recorded on the deck, how are you going to edit it?

Once it's on the deck, it's not uncompressed anymore... now it's in a specific format. Edit it by capturing to your NLE, just keep in mind that if you record to DVCPro HD or HDCAM, you're going to need an editing system that can handle it.

If you're shooting in an environment where you can have a workstation on hand, you can capture direct to hard drive via a DeckLink or AJA SDI interface.

is there any standalone hard disk drive with a DeckLink or AJA SDI interface ?
if not, you still need a worstation at hand

it looks like the same story of the P2 card.

-Hey P2 card are great, no more need for disk.
-But they are small and expensive so how to store long video ?
-Hey it easy , just save your P2 on disk, so you can reuse them....

My opinion is this product will be a total failure if you expect it to be in te same range as other HDV product.
Nice for indies (on rental obviously, no purchase), but not even for prosumer.

that is exacltly what prosumer is avoiding .
You get a nice piece of Pro equipment and then you have to buy all the production line if you want to use it properly.
SDI, who got SDI ? most of prosumer do not even know what it is.

How do you figure? Are P2 cards free now?

Of course he was showing that you don't need anything else at all with the JVC. However, there is a firestore device available if you want DTE capabilities...

Keep in mind that the Canon XL H1 = $9000 = $9000, exactly the same as the JVC HD100 if you consider HDV a viable option. You do have a choice... and I'm betting for "lesser" projects, many XL H1 owners will find the convenience and quality of HDV good enough not to bother with the HD-SDI connector on many occasions.

I'd be willing to bet on that as well. For day in, day out operations HDV is a great solution. It's nice to have HD-SDI out, if you needed it you'd find a way to capture it off the camera.
