Any release date yet?

Just curious. This is supposed to ship in November. Well it is now, November...

I talked to a Canon rep yesterday who suggested they could be shipping within the next couple of weeks or so, and will definitely be shipping before the end of the year. He also indicated there's been a lot of interest in the camera, including from all the major networks, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're hard to get initially.

Why would the major networks buy such a cheap camera? I thought they loved to waste money on super expensive equipment :D

No seriously aren't they all using HDCAM stuff? This is crappy HDV and surely they won't use the SDI output will they?

See, that's the thing: the Canon XL-H1 isn't a crappy HDV camera with a pointless HD-SDI port; it's a full-blown HD camera which just happens to have an HDV tape deck in it. Name the next least expensive camera with a true HD lens, full 1440x1080 sensors, and a live HD-SDI port which outputs uncompressed 4:2:2 HD video at a data rate of almost 1.5 Gbps. NOW do you see why the networks are interested in this camera?

By the way, don't knock HDV if you haven't tried it. It is the new de facto standard for affordable HD production.

Release Date is.....

Canon has informed us here at Birns & Sawyer that November 17th is the date. We are getting training from Canon on November 8th. Hope that clears up the confusion.
