Happy New Year everyone. This is the year that many things will "settle" technology-wise. We will learn if we jumped the gun buying our Canons before the "P2 Revolution". We'll learn if HDV is all it's promised to be. We'll hear of new lens options, and we'll discover new ways to tell stories with a new medium.

I hope that a sophisticated, easy to use, tapeless sollution will be made available for the H1, but there are still many questions to be answered in terms of acquisition, editing, storage and distribution of HD and HDV material.

Many films will be made and there will be many "I told you so's" from all sides... But we're all going to learn new stuff... Steve Rosen

Happy New Year to you Steve and everyone else. I agree with all you said. Now I am interested in seeing what sort of creative work people do this year with the new tools. DV was always very over-sold in terms of the chances of one's production ever showing in theaters however good the story might be. Not true that story trumps all, though coming up with a good story is vastly more difficult than buying a camera. Now we have an affordable tool (HDV) that gets filmmakers "in the ballpark" of an image that doesn't make the film essentially doomed from the begining.
For docs the P2 options seems pretty unworkable so I bit the bullet and orderd the H1 after closely following everything posted on this forum. I look forward to comparing it to my Z1.

That's why I chose the Canon as well. I make documentaries for a living, both client jobs and self motivated stories. The Canon is by far the best choice for this medium. However, if JVC had had its shit together, there would have been serious competition - they blew it.

The Canon, properly configured, is a good hand-held and tripod camera. The picture is stunning, and if anything is better, it's a matter of degrees...

Finally got my Sony deck yesterday and am beginning some serious HDV editing... I feel like I'm back in the dark ages with no preview monitor for picture or audio and long rendering times.. but this, too, shall pass... Steve Rosen
