The gain settings on the XL H1 are -3, Auto, 0, +3, +6, +12, +18... As for grainy picture (in the short time I got to "play" with an XL H1) I wouldn't wanna go past +6 but like you I hate gain so I guess different people have different ideas on it.

I would want to stay on 0db! or better yet -3db!
