Image Parameters for Indoor Interview / Medical Examination Shoot

Hello all!

Friday, I will have my first shoot with an XL-H1 (two of them, to be precise). I will be renting the cameras, and will have access to the first cam Thursday morning. The shoot is indoors, and consists of an interview and a variety of medical examinations of the hand. It will be shot in a real examination room with the set being primarily white. I'm planning to light with diffused tungsten sources to avoid blinding the talents.

Having shot with the XL-1s until now, I've not had the oportunity to adjust image parameters in a way it is possible with the XL-2 and the XL-H1. Because I have only little time for experimentation, I would very much appreciate advice from people who have used the XL-H1 under similar conditions to point me in the right direction with regard to parametrizing the image.

TIA for any insights!

Regards,

Ron

Be certain to bring an external 2 channel monitor so you can put both of them into the monitor and A/B them to get the looks the same. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you white balance correctly on both cameras.

You probably don't have an HD monitor on set, but even an SD monitor will give you a good idea if the looks match...

Thanks for the hint, Kevin! I have a Marshall LCD SD-Monitor with composite and S-VHS inputs. Although it has two inputs, I can't display both at the same time. The image quality of this display is abysmal, unfortunately, so I'm not sure it's worth brining it to the set. I think I'll be better off experimenting with image parameters and white balance under the comparable lighting conditions before the shoot, and fine-tune by evaluating the test footage in the editing environment.

I was able to get the first camera today already, and I've done some limited testing, primarily to see if my workflow is OK (capture with DVHSCap as MPEG-2 stream, convert to DVCProHD with MPEG Streamclip, then import into FCP). All seems well. I'll be experimenting with image parameters tomorrow.

If anyone can provide further info regarding Custom Preset configurable image parameters (Gamma, Knee, Black Stretch/Press, Master Pedestal, etc.) in the meantime, I'd be most grateful!

Regards,

Ron
