Dave,
I can't reference the manual at the moment but on the side of the camera there is a knob that turns to 3 different positions.

i
f1
f2

these correspond to

60i
30f (progressive)
24f (progressive)

You won't find this buried in a menu....it's a physical switch. Which is odd because this feature could likely have been in a menu and Canon could have designated this external switch for something more practical that you need access to in a hurry. Most of us are not changing frame rates on the fly so we seldom use this switch.

In searching I found...

Hi
not sure if anyone's seen it but there is a ggreat article here.
A TV series called "The Long Way Down" - motorcycle trip UK through Africa..
Some of the footage was done in HDV with an XL-H1.

If you have a 50i camera, then 60i is available only if you purchase an upgrade through Canon UK / Canon Europa or wherever you are. With a 50i camera, your frame rate choices are 50i and 25F. With the upgrade you can switch between 50i and 60i systems in the Signal Setup menu. Then you have frame rate choices of 60i, 30F and 24F. Switch back to the 50i system at any time. Hope this helps,

Thanks Chris. It never occurred to me that he might be in a PAL region. Us North Americans are so narrow minded.
