Here's a comparison between two different softening filters:

Top Left: No Filter
Top Right: Tiffen Promist 1/4
Bottom Left: Schneider Classic Soft 1/2

Steven, maybe I'm a putz but wouldn't a more accurate comparison be to compare the tiffen soft f/x 1/2 to the classic soft 1/2 instead of the 1/4 pro-mist? Or is this just a subjective sort of thing, to figure out if you want pro-mist (or frost) or soft f/x (or classic soft)

It probably would be more appopriate but I happen to own these two filters so I put it up just out of interest rather than a scientific comparison
