mpeg2 with fast video shots is not good ???
I search but can't find the right answer for my question
Does mpeg2 format capture on the tape of XL A1 or XL H1 give problems with fast video shots ? I ask this because read some of the DVX users that this is a issue of the mpeg2 compress. That's why is the Dvcpro on P2 card better they say. Can anybody of the XL H1 users say more about these issue ?? |
The question addresses XL H1 owners, so it has been moved to the XL H1 forum.

This same question puzzled me before getting the Xl H1. After taking telephoto footages of sportsmen moving about 60 mph and of quickly moving/flying birds using 1/16000 s shutter speed, I'm no longer concerned of the mpeg2 compression. The bit rate of XL H1 and HDV seems to work out fine. At least, I have not observed any problems.
However, the quality of the mpeg2 compressed HDV image is not as goos as that of the HD-SDI signal. I mean, when you compare side by side and frame by frame the HDV and HD-SDI images of fast moving objects, definitely you will notice the artifacts generated mpeg2 compression. |
I've been looking at some 24F footage available here and elsewhere on the net, specifically looking for bad artifacting in motion. Even on whip pans, the Canon seems to do pretty well. I've spotted a few artifacts, but they were only in a few frames and only visible by freeze framing the footage. When I have to look that hard for an artifact, I know the people viewing the footage won't notice a thing.
The 4:2:0 color sampling actually bothers me more than any motion artifacts, but that's another topic altogether (and addressed if using the HD-SDI). www.philipwilliams.com |
I also was expecting this to be a problem area with the XH H1.
So far, I have not noticed any problems and my shots included waterfalls, fast moving water, pans, and drag boat racing. However, I have not freeze framed every shot looking for problems. |
The Canon H1 does a very good job compressing 1080i @ 1.485gigabps
to HDV's 25megabps, BUT I have noticed major problems when you get a major amount of movement in the frame. The H1 surpasses my expectations in what HDV does using that very limited amount of bandwidth, but once a reliable/inexpensive HD-SDI mobile recorder becomes available, I will be looking into purchasing it. |
