FCP 24 F Support Arrives!
 

Mike over at HDFORINDIES.COM just posted that Final Cut Pro has just today released their update, which includes support for 24 F and 25 F modes.

it just works.

great for jvc hd100 & hvx200 p2 users with apple computers too.

And the H1? ; )

I directed a 30 minute movie called "My Confession" with it. I'm cutting on Avid Xpress Pro v.5.5. I came up with a workflow which maintains the 24 F progressive structure, and never requires you to put a 3:2 pulldown on the footage. If anyone's interested, I'll post the white paper for it. I'm cutting in an Avid 1080p 23.98 Project.

I am very interested in the AVID Xpress Pro workflow for 24F on the XLH1.

I currrenlty have Xpress Pro 5.2.1
Would your workflow work on this version of Xpress Pro?

Let us all know how you have made this work. Very interested.
Also would you be able to post any examples from "My Confession" using this workflow since I will be shooting a short film soon with the XLH1 and would like to see some drama examples.

And is there support for 30f in the new FCP Update? Sorry, I'm away from my computer right now (my Mac w/FCP on it ; ) )

It's sort of funny, because there isn't a sequence preset for 30F just 24F. There are DVCPro and XDcam 1080 30P but no HDV 30F.

AXP 5.2.1 will not work
 

Sorry Simon, you need Xpress Pro 5.5. The reason for this is I transcoded my files from raw MPEG transports into Avid DNX Files. To the best of my knowledge, AXP 5.2.1 cannot use DNX. Also, does 5.2.1 support 1080p/23.98 fps projects? That is what you must cut in to maintian progressive structure.
Anyway, my workflow is as follows. Be warned, it is render intensive, I average 3-4 hours of render for each hour of footage, and then you have to import Quicktimes. I have two towers so I was able to double up, but if you have a lot of footage you are in for some long wait times.

Step 1- Install Aspect HD onto your PC. It is $500, but you can download a free two week trial. Aspect can convert the tape in a .m2t file. Just plug the firewire into the Camera, and into your firewire port. Be careful, a data break on your tape will corrupt the file, it's best to load in smaller chunks, and check them.

Step 2-Download MPEG Streamclip. It is freeware. It will take you .m2t and convert it into the Quicktime of your choice. I used Avid DnX 220-23.98 fps.

Step 3-Once you have your Quicktime, import into Avid 1080p/23.98 fps project. This will take 4 hours for a one hour tape (I told you this was render intensive!)


Step 4- Edit, you're done!

30F on FCP
 

I shoot with my XL-H1 in 30F and FCP has been just sucking it in fine with the HDV 1080/60i preset. I don't get any of the interlacing artifacts with the XL-H1 that I get when I use footage from my Sony HDR-HC1 (1080/60i only).

FCP may not be doing any special deinterlacing but it does seem to "just work." Please let me know if there's anything different I should be doing.

HDV 30F works the same way that you could capture and edit "old" XL1 30 fps frame mode material in a DV 29.97 480i timeline.

The difference now is that the new FCP update has specific compatibility with 24F mode, where it recognizes the 24p stream carried with repeat flags (in 29.97 technically) and ignores the unnecessary frames and leaves you with a perfect 24p capture. And with new HDV 1080 24p easy setup, your timeline is 24p and you will render without fields and be able to export correct 24p without any bugaboos.

Is 24F suppose to be listed as an option when selecting the file format to import with? I downloaded the new FCP update and I don't see 24F listed as an option anywhere. If anyone knows then can you pass on? Thanks!

Select 24P. As far as Final Cut is concerned, 24F is 24P (which is what we were saying all along anyway).
