zooming in further
 

Hi all. I should know this, but alas, I do not, which is why I turn to all of you talented people out there to hopefully help me out.

I have the xl1s, and need to do zooming past the 16x. I've heard ok things about the 1.6x adaptor, but nothing to go out and buy it.

I'm looking to film a small to large concert hall, which a few cameras, but will need to zoom in past the 16x, from a distance shot.
Anyone have any suggestions as what to do? Are there other lenses I could attach? I know there are, but are those other lenses only for the still photos, or can I use them to take video, as well?

As much as I can get. Maybe even just an additional 2x.

Remember that whatever you gain on the long end of the lens you are going to lose on the wide end.

Also, most extenders will cost you anywhere between 1 1/2 to 2 stops of light, so your lighting is a consideration.

An option would be to use the adapter that allows you to use Canon still lenses with the XL series. This will probably help with the lighting trade-off as you can use a faster lens without having to worry about stop loss. While you might need to buy the adapter, you can always rent the lenses.

Yes, the Canon XL EF adapter allows you to use Canon EOS EF lenses on the XL1/s. In doing so the effective focal length of the lens is multiplied by 7.2. Thus a simple 100mm lens becomes a 720mm super telephoto. Needless to say, the use of a tripod is mandatory.

Start calling local camera stores. Many times they will rent used equipment they have. You will also need the Canon XL EF Adapter. This adapts the XL1 mount to Canon EOS EF.
