XL1s- set up on analog out?

Does anyone know for sure if an XL1s outputs NTSC (US) analog video with the required 7.5 IRE set up.

I'm going to use one and my monitor can't apply the set up if it's not there.

I know that nearly ALL DV based decks fail to do this .... although some can do it on playback (not FW - analog through monitoring). So I assume the XL-1 monitors a bit crushed in the blacks?

Please read this article from Adam Wilt's web site. It explains everything you need to know about setup.

I am aware of of the information in this article.

However it does not answer my question : does the video/monitor out of an XL1s have 7.5 IRE set up applied so that a field monitor looks correct.

I think the answer is 'no' .. but when using an analog feed one needs to know for sure.

For instance, in my edit suite using a "Pro" Sony DVCam DSR45 if you run FW in and use the analog outs to monitor there is *no* set up (ever). If you record the FW input to tape and replay the tape then set up is added or not according to a menu setting.

So if you are not carful, and run with no set up, you can end up with a final result that you've only ever seen with no set up applied. When this is put to a DVD for instance, the DVD player will add set up and things look radically different.

(my production monitors can apply the required set up in all instances so the edit suites are taken care of).

However in the instance of an analog feed from an XL1s to a monitor, I need to know if there is set up applied or not? Maybe a menu setting?

I will be shooting on it next week... so I'd like an informed answer. The manual (I got from Canon online) makes no mention that I can find.

Tips wanted for shooting an Autocross video.
 

Hey guys,

Next month I will be shooting an Autocross video (Auto-X). For those of you who don't know what an Auto-X is, it is an event where cars will run around a technical course on a large open flat place. The course will be setup with cones and the idea is to post the fastest time around the course. The video I will be shooting will be on an airport runway in the middle of the day. It will be very bright out.

I am open to basically all general suggestions, no matter how simple, or how advanced. I am shooting with a Canon XL1s. I don't have too many accessories (Graduated Grey, UV for filters). I know a lot about the XL1s in certain respects, but little in other areas. So any and all comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

nd filter on, sun behind you, manual focus on, but use the push-to-focus button with the camera zoomed all the way in at the longest distance between you and the car.

that way everything in a shorter distance will generally be in focus... and of course you won't have the camera set to "auto", it'll be in the full manual mode... although i use the audio auto gain for all the car stuff i do.

if announcer audio is important, check to see if they are broadcasting to the pits on either am or fm radio... you can plug a walkman radio into your video camera, set it up for 4-channel audio, and get decent tower audio.

you might also try to get as high up as you can, maybe on top of a motor home.

Ther are two video supply houses in yhour neck of the woods, within a mile of the beltway. Are they open on Saturday AM? If memory serves me correctly, Washington pro Services was one, CTL was the other. Also Best Buy, Circuit City, or one of the othe box houses might have a third party charger that will take the Canon batteries.

how to put my footage from XL1s to a computer
 

this is the newbiest question youve ever read. Im completely fresh and dont have a clue what to do to throw my footage from my just bought XL1s to my laptop.
do i need a capture card? what capture card do i need? can i get something cheap but reasonable?
i dont have a firewire input in my laptop. can i buy a firewire card and shove it into LAN pocket? will it work if i just connect my camera to that card and run the Premiere to download the footage?
my laptop is a sort of cheap end, do i need to buy external memory?
these are the specs of my laptop:
Acer TravelMate 2313WLMi
Intel Celeron M processor 370 (1.5GHz, 00 MHz FSB, 1MB L2ache) 448 MB RAM
The guy i bought the camcorder of on ebay wouldnt answer my e-mail to help me out and i ALREADY (can you imagine) got a small job to film and my deadline is approaching! please, help

Your laptop may be marginal at best (if it works at all) for for serious video editing, especially the hard drive. The hard drive may not be large enough or fast enough for meaningful work.

You may be able to find PCMCIA firewire adapter that will work with the XL1 (not all firewire adapters wil), or you may be able to find an entry level editing and capture combination that worrks with the USB2 port, e.g., Pinnacle's Studio product line.

Look for users groups of the NLE you plan to use, and fro yo rlaptop if you can dfind one, ask in their forums whether or not anyone has had luck doing NLE with your brand laptop. You might find pointers to software that will meet your needs.

Can this microphone work with my camera? It was suggested to me by the reps at B&H. After playing with it for a while, I can never get clean audio out of it on my camera.

It sounds great if I connect it to a mixer and record into my computer. On my camera however, the audio is all distorted. What am I doing wrong?

Turn on the in-camera attenuator and it should work well.

Wasn't the VL EOS adapter intended to allow use of EOS lenses on the Canon L1/L2 (Hi8) camcorders? If so, it will not NOT fit the XL series (different mount intended for a single 1/2" CCD).

Douplicating tapes help - quick!
 

I've got my XL1s hooked up to a buddies mini DV camecorder and need to make a copy of a few tapes. I figured it would be no problem but for some reason can't figure it out.

I've got it playing fine on the tv from his camcorder then I switched the audio and video cables into the back end of the XL1s (audio/video) ports where it says "audio 1 in/out" and the video port of course as well. I have all three white, red and yellow hooked in but am not getting signal in the viewfinder.

Is there some setting I need the XL1s on to have a line feed to be able to record from this cam to my cam on line or something. I have it set to "VCR" but have tried other settings with no success. Is it just impossible to make duplicates this way?

Help! I need to get this out tonight!

Nevermind I figured it out! You have to hit rec/pause button for it to display then hit play to start recording....kinda weird!

I have the XL1s and I have a M185 receiver from lectrosonic - it's got a plug that comes out of it to hook into the small microphone port near the front of the camera, but I want to plug it into the XLR port....where can I find the adapter to do this that will keep it in stereo?? I think the jack is the 1/8" jack, or whatever the Canon on-camera microphone jack size is...it fits in the same jack. Any suggestions??

Do you mean the R185 receiver? (The M185 is a transmitter).

If so, and although I've not used one, per the manual you should be able to connect an RCA cable from its RCA connector to the Audio1 inputs on the XL1, use a "Y" adapter to feed the same signal to the left and right inputs. And be sure Audio1 is set for line level signals. If the receive is mounted on the camcorder you should be OK with the unbalancd output for the short distance. Cables available at Radio Shack, etc.

Pretty good. I am not much into rap, but the video looks nice.

Does the xl1s have native wide screen? If not how did you get it, thanks.

Hello all,

My XL1s has been doing something funky lately. After I shoot with it for about 30 mins to an hour it starts blinking in bold red letters "REMOVE CASSETTE TAPE" (or something to that effect). It keeps me from recording and I have to turn the camera off and turn it back on to see if it will let me record again. Usually it won't let me keep the tape in there unless I change out the battery. For some reason every time I change out the battery it lets me go back to recording and stops telling me to eject tape.

I was wondering if there is possibly something seriously wrong with the camera or if this is more of a simple fix. Do I need to go get it checked out or is there someone out there that knows exactly what it's doing?

It may be detecting that the take up reel isn't moving and it's saying to remove the tape so that the tape doesn't end up all over the insides of the camera. Since it has separate indicators for dirty heads and condensation, this is the only thing I can think of. Could be belt slippage or a weak motor (which may explain why it needs full battery voltage to operate).

My suggestion is to get on the phone with Canon service and follow whatever advice they may have for you.

What on auto for Turkey hunting (white balance)?
 

Just shot for 4 - 15 hour days as my very first paid shoot. It was grilling to say the least. I kept everything on auto. The guy I was working for said he'd had another guy running a beta cam and would be constantly performing manual white balance. He was asking why I wasn't. Anyway, should I have bothered doing it? We shot from break of dawn to dusk, mostly outdoors. When action happens, it's fast. A lot of the time we set up in complete darkness. Sometimes we set up on roosted birds and could barely move so as not to spook them. Should I be doing auto or manual white balance in these situations? What about daytime or dusk shooting?

Manual white balancing is alway considered the best.
Having said that, I think the XL1s has a great automatic white balance that I hardly feel the need to put it on automatic...

Played around with it this morning and my manual was just about the same as auto white balance. Will it make any difference with regards to having a back lite bird? One morning we were on a bird at daybreak. I doubt I'd be able to do much in the sitation but how would I fix the back lite problem in the moment?

Hello - I've recently purchased a used XL1 and am having an audio issue with the "mix" mode. I am trying to mix sound from the onbaord mic and a lavalier using the beachtek plate that was included with the unit.

I can only capture the "audio 1" channel on the Vegas Video 5 system I'm using whether it is the lav or the onboard camera. I believe it's a capture issue becuase I get levels during recording and playback on the camera and can hear both mics through headphones.

If I've left out any important info just let me know. I have a shoot coming up that will require both mics to be active so, any help is greatly appreciated.

You can't capture 4 channel audio directly using Vegas 5 and for that matter most NLE's can't either.You can capture using other programs though.Also you can do 2 captures .... 1st with audio 1, 2nd with audio 2 ,then sync them.see this thread for more info http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...hannel+capture

xl1s viewfinder magnifying glass problem
 

The colors on my xl1s LCD screen, watching throught viewfinder, are more darker and blue. I was thinking that the problem is in LCD screen, but after take off magnifying glass, everything was ok. So, looking through magnifyng glas, without screw it on wiefinder, everything is still ok, but if I spin it little bit over LCD in my hand, colours start changing end become darken blue. Any idea?

I priced some simular packages here and on another forum for around the same $$ amount and she's screaming at me now, she wants her new camera gadget and for me to blow it out so I can spend triple that on a fancier one with a gazillion more buttons.

72mm .3x wide angle lens?
 

I am looking to see if a .3x wide angle lens exists for a 72mm thread (XL1). I can't find anything on the internet.

If not, Could I use a step down ring for a 58mm raynox lens?

Using Step down makes no sense to me.. vignetting at wide angle on the primary lens.

XL1 Remote WL-D2000
 

I am needing a remote for my Cannon XL1.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Also I was told that I need the Remote to turn off all of the menus when you are using an extra screen. Is this true, or am I just missing something?

Hi Alan, if you don't want to buy it as a replacement part from Canon, then your next best bet is Ebay. Be sure to search for "Canon" and not "Cannon" though. And yes you need this remote in order to turn the displays on and off for remote monitors. Another way to do this without the WL-D2000 is to get the Canon ZR-1000 wired remote lens controller. It has the same displays button that the wireless remote has. It's about $160 to $180 or so.

Xl1 audio drift
 

i'm new to your group but am happy to find it. I love my Xl1 .

Lately I have been using FCP and capturing 64 minute clips. I notice that the audio starts to drift at the 30 minute mark and gets off about 12 frames at the end of these files. I can capture smaller segments as a work around but I'm curious if anyone here has heard of this problem?

20X canon lens??
 

i was looking at the watchdog articles on the xl1s and this lens i found on ebay wasn't covered. it is a 20X auto lens, it has a focus and zoom preset option, could someone explain the present option and how it works? the auction says it makes focus pulling easy.
