Storage case for a new XL1s
 

I know there is someone who can suggest a storage case I can get for under a $150.00 - pelican or something but I can't find a site! Please send links or ideas. I mean hey I just dropped a lot of change for a camera I need a break please. Thanks in advance.

You dropped a lot of change on a camera and you really owe it to yourself to protect it properly. Storage cases should always be part of your budget when you make this kind of purchase. That said, just do a search here on the forums as awhile back we've had several threads on home-made storage solutions. Case for yout XL1s
 

I just acquired a XL1s last weekend. I also purchased a Pellican 1600 case to store it all in. Everything fits nicely, and the foam is real easy to tear out and customize.. you get around 8 inches of foam to protect your investment with. I picked up my case at Wolf Camera for $150... I consider it to be more than worth it. Waterproof and dustfree... I truly think I could back over the thing with a pickup and not have to worry about it.

I got the 4 layer foam.

level 1____________________________________________

(pegboard glued to bottom of level #2 for supportand support L+R lift straps)
level 3____________________________________________
level 4____________________________________________
BOTTOM

levels 1+2 glued together, plus a L+R strap to lift it out of case to access level 3.

Levels 3+4 are glued together.

camera goes thru layers 1,2,3, (#4 =bottom for protection)

cut into level 3 -one space for manual lens, and another space for earphones and 14x's round lens lenshood(they fit in the same space)

Cut into level #1 are spaces for the following:
3 batteries and 1.6x extender, another for my wireless system w/lav, 5 mini-dv tapes
another for XL-1 lens shade
(also F&R lens caps, and a sweat bandana)

Plus cut thru 1,2,3, is hole for handheld mic (largest being in level #1 for mic head)
also
a hole thru 1 and 2 for a small flash light.
on level #1 bsides the XL-1 is a long horizontal area for shotgun mic.

The Lowepro Vidcam 6 bag is well under $100 US, and quite good with a lifetime warranty. And you can always line it with more padding like 1" (soft) packaging foam. That's what I did..., works fine, looks fine, the price is right.

How about Canon's HC-3100 or Kata soft case?

I live in a rural area so I have opted to purchase online becase I have no real choice. I am ordering from www.usinternetsales.com the Pelican 1610 for 159.00 not including shipping. I feel that is reasonable. Of those who have purchased a pelican case could someone send a pic of there items layed out in there cases to djh3@insightbb.com I would appreciate it. I am very visual.

I don't have a pic for you but I can tell you that the case is very large, and you have to cut the foam inside yourself---to make the XL-1 fit (or any cam). This case is maximum protection, though, completely waterproof! As soon as I find the Pelican link, I'll post it up at www.DVFreak.com/links

You can also find similar cases, and cheaper, at an automotive/tools shop. (If you have one nearby.)

Is the removable foam or the movable padded partitions a better way to go (in Pelican cases)?
