time code question

I recorded a scene, rewinded to the begining of the scene and reviewed it to its end on my XL1S.

question #1: How can I start recording a new scene exactly from the end of the previous scene?

question #2: New time code started every time I start recording a new scene.
How can I keep using same time code within many scenes instead of getting a new time code for each new scene?

question 1:

I don't think it's possible to do this once you've reviewed the footage. see below. in fact even if you don't review, the xl1 will rewind slightly after you stop (to maintain time code) thus cutting off a few second of the previous scene.

question2:

after finishing a scene allow the tape to continue to roll for a bit --10 seconds or so_ that way you can review your scene, stop at the end (but within the post-scene timecode) and then maintain timecode with the new scene.
Another common method (which I've never used) is to pre-stripe your tape...by essentially pre- recording the timecode onto the tape and then recording your scenes over it.

Also, use the rec search buttons on the front left panel of the XL1. When you're in rec pause, you can use the rec search minus button to back up a few frames into the previous scene. The timecode picks up at that point and resumes from whatever that number is. See also my article on the Watchdog, "Not in your XL1 manual: color bars and time code" for more tricks. Hope this helps,

rolling back

Chris,

Does the rolling back a few seconds apply to the xl1s or just the xl1? I never noticed this on my xl1s.

Applies to both. The same buttons are on the XL1S left front panel and the wireless remote control, just as they are on the XL1. Hope this helps,
