Canon Xl1

Hello,

I just found out about these forums and i think this is great.. I have a question that is probably very simple for some of you Spielbergs out there... Is there any way that i can bring Video From my DVD Player to my Canon Xl1? I know i can bring audio, but what about video? Please let me know..

Thanks..

if it's just an XL1 you'd have to first capture it to your computer, then re-export it using a DV tool app via the IEEE1394 port. If it's an XL1s you can just hook your DVD player up to the composite inputs on the back of the camera.

Thats what i was scared of... Could you recommend a good s-video capture card...

Thanks again

The XL1 does not have analog video input, but the XL1S does. This is a common question and please refer to my XL1 Frequently Asked Questions page at http://www.dvinfo.net/xl1faq.htm for a full run-down on the most common XL1 questions.

For video capture, consider a card that has both DV and analog capture capabilities, because at some point (hopefully soon) you'll want to do your editing in the DV format.

The Canopus DVStorm (see www.justedit.com) is perfect for this, as it has S-Video as well as DV input and output. Hope this helps,

A couple alternatives to check for analog-to-firewire conversion are the Dazzle Hollywood Bridge and Sony DVMC-DA2. Couldn't say whether or not one is better than the other.

Believe that the Sony DA2 does respect the various copyguard/macrovision signals. Don't know about the Dazzle.

The XL1 will not make a copy (via firewire) of a copy protected DV signal. This feature could prevent copying a commercial DVD signal depending on how the signal is processed before it reaches the XL1. Same may apply the the XL1S inputs, both analog and digital.
