Correct instructions for Cineform to read Sony LPCM Audio with AVCHD

If you've got LPCM audio from a Sony AVCHD cam such as the NX5 and cannot get Cineform to convert the audio, there is a very simple fix. Unfortunately, there have been confusing typos in Cineform's message on how to do this.

Here are the correct steps for Win 7:

a) go to the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\CineForm"

(b) find and doubleclick on the file "mc_dec_mpa_ds.ax" --- obviously, you do not type the quotation marks.

(c) Windows asks which program to use to open that file. Select "regsvr32.exe." (If you need to browse to find it, this program will be found under C:\Windows\System32.)

You should then see a message saying the file was successfully registered.

LPCM audio should now convert along with the AVCHD video.

Re: Correct instructions for Cineform to read Sony LPCM Audio with AVCHD

For clarity, this is for NeoHD. I was using version 5.5, build 318 at the time this is written. I'll provide the Cineform instructions here with my comments on the typos.

Cineform starts by telling you to "Browse to the following folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm\Common Files\CineForm."
The problem here is that, under Win 7, there is a folder called "C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm" as well as "C:\Program Files (x86\Common Files\CineForm." The first file --- the one named "C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm" does not have a "Common Files" subfolder. The first time through with the instructions, I got to that C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm, could not find a "common files" subfolder and just assumed I had received out-of-date instructions. There is simply a typo in the instruction. The correct folder is ""C:\Program Files (x86\Common Files\CineForm."

The other confusion occurs when Cineform instructs you to look "for the file called, ;mc_dec_mpa_ds.ax'." When I first tried to do this, I assumed there was some weirdly named file which began with a semi-colon character and --- obviously --- a file search did not turn up any such files. Actually, the semi-colon should be an open-quote and the final apostrophe should have been a close-quote. (At least, it should for standard North American English punctuation.) Search with the letter M" as the the first character and Windows will find the file for you.

Hope this helps avoid confusion for others.
