Is uncompressed capture still on the cards?

One early promise inspired me to buy the XDR: uncompressed video capture. Yet there has been nothing further on that from CD that I could find. Is it still on the cards? Not that I am not happy with capture options at the moment, but would like uncompressed capture as well as I do that direct to a Black Magic card when in the studio and would like to match field captures with the XDR with the studio footage.

Me too

I too was influenced by the possibility of uc.

I guess there are many implications of raiding the cards but I hope it's still on the agenda.

Alan

Yes, it is still on the agenda.

Any timeline for uncompressed?

Hi Dan

Any idea when it may be implimented?

Dear Friends,

We just added Standard Definition Support.

We are debugging Pre-Record Buffer Support at this time.

Along with Pre-Record Buffer, we expect to release Over and Under-Cranking at the same time. This will even work on cameras that do not have native Over and Under-Cranking.

Please note that this works best with cameras that are capable of 720p as this gives a wider range of over-cranking. We expect to work with 1080p cameras, but the range is more limited.

We will also be implementing Time-Lapse.

We want to finish most of the above features before we set a date for uncompressed.

We also want everyone to know that our 100 Mbps Long-GOP is visually indistinguishable from uncompressed and is a "file based" recording system.

For full uncompressed, due to the volume of data required, the best way to get the full uncompressed data out of the Flash XDR is to play it out via HD-SDI, then capture it via a HD-SDI capture card.

Thus, uncompressed is handled differently, and we want everyone to know in advance.

There is no magical way to record uncompressed to four CompactFlash cards, then transfer the contents of these cards faster than real-time to a computer, as far as I know.

The fastest way is to capture the full uncompressed via the HD-SDI output, and this is real-time.

Most people wouldn't have the hardware to capture realtime uncompressed direct from the XDR to their hard drive I imagine, only the normal compressed HD-SDI capture process.
It might be possible to implement a tunable reduced speed frame playback mode for uncompressed from the XDR? Combine that with an application that captures an uncompressed frame from HD-SDI when the timecode increments. Might be worth a try.

Dan,

What kind of over/under cranking specs can we anticipate?

Currently, the EX1 will do 60 fps in 720p.

What could we expect in 720p and 1080p with the nanoFlash?

Thanks,

Jim

Dan Keaton June 2nd, 2009 07:17 PM

Dear James,

In 720p, 1 to 60 frames per second.

In 1080p, 1 to 30 frames per second.

This is what is planned, and what we anticipate we can do.

We expect that we will require an I-Frame Only mode.

James Huenergardt June 2nd, 2009 07:22 PM

I wonder how Sony does it in the EX1 as it's long-GOP and uses the same hardware CD is using (minus one chip).

I guess it won't matter to me either way as it should all look/edit mostly the same.

Dear James,

This is inside information:

I think it will work find with Long-GOP.

Mike does not.

Time will tell.

(I would bet on Mike!)

Hi Dan,

No chance to "squeeze out" more than 30fps in 1080p mode?

Also, on another note: do you have a word from SCS that Vegas will be able to handle the I-frame format? With 100 Mbps long-GOP, it works beautifully :)

Cheers

Piotr

Dear Piotr,

Sorry, but I do not think we can exceed 30fps for 1080p.

1080p60 requires 3 GB HD-SDI or Dual-Link HD-SDI. 1.485 Gbps HD-SDI can not handle 1080p60.
