100 Mbps & Sony Vegas
 

Has anyone used Sony Vegas with Flash XDR 100 Mbps Long-GOP (MXF) files. Any problems, suggestions? I currently have about 3-4 hours of footage and I need to edit it into a half hour show. So I just want to make sure it works perfect. I recently tried using Avid Media Composer 4 and it does not support 100 Mbps and identifies it as 50 Mbps and does not play files smoothly at all, so it is really tough to fine tune something. Please advise.

Our 100 Mbps footage will be indentified as 50 Mbps.

We set the header to 50 Mbps, but the footage is actually 100 Mbps.

We perform this trick so that various editors will accept the footage, as most do not have options for 100 Mbps footage.

But, the actual data is 100 Mbps and the editor will use all of the data and quality, so you do get the benefits of 100 Mbps.

You are however, restricted to whatever options your editor supports when doing the final render of your project. With the proper equipment, one can play out the timeline, uncompressed and record in back into the Flash XDR or nanoFlash at whatever bit rate you choose.


If you have a faster computer and a good disk subsystem, then you can play our 100 Mbps Long-GOP footage in Sony Vegas. I know that an Intel I7-920 based HP computer plays this very well.

A friend recently purchased an HP with 9 GB, 1 TB of SATA-II disk and a Blu-ray burner for around $1,250 and it works great with Sony Vegas.

External hard drives using USB or Firewire are not as fast as SATA-II internal drives, or eSATA drives.

I welcome comments from other Vegas users.
