Lets not overstate the reliability of the CD drives. I had one fail on me in the middle of a shoot. I had to return it to be "recertified". It cost me a lot of time on set and more than a week out of my hands. They made it right but that doesn't take away from the problems it caused during the production.

With an off-the-shelf drive you at least have options when failures happen. Samsung is more than a bargain basement product. It is a highly reliable brand that I've been using with other recorders for several years. I've had ZERO failures with them so far. Not saying failures won't happen. So far my failure rate with CD drives is higher than with Samsung drives (1 vs 0).

If I were to need more SSD to use in my 7Q+, I would not hesitate to use SamSung
However, I have no need as the two SSDs that came with it are more than enough for me

I have had my fair share of issues with the 7Q system but for me it just makes more sense that a system using proprietary media will avoid more problems that one that starts mixing things up. Now of course I've used many cameras where the media is produced by another manufacturer but i think when you take on a system from a smaller producer (like convergent) everything that can be done to make things run smoothly is probably best process!

I agree Matt. Certainly nobody wants to spend the money for proprietary memory, but if it translates into the slightest increase in peace of mind you do it and go on. There's a lot at stake.
