Chris Hurd March 18th, 2005 12:18 AM

Hi Murph,

My favorite part of any trade show is meeting people, especially my fellow DV Info Net members! NAB is a great time to do some after-hours networking. The thing is, if we schedule our own particular evening get-together, it's going to conflict with all the other nightly social events that are going on all week -- events which I'm already committed to and really don't want to miss! So, how about hooking up at any of these evening functions...

Monday night it looks like I'll be attending a Canopus user's mixer, but I don't have the time & location details yet.

Tuesday night is pretty busy! First is Douglas Spotted Eagle's Vegas Users Group celebration, in a 2nd floor meeting room at the LVCC starting at 6:30pm. Click the banner at HDV Info Net for all the details. I'm spending most of the evening there before heading over to the Stardust to catch the tail end of the annual ProMax / Charles McConathy DV Cafe.

Wednesday night it's back to the Stardust again for Michael Horton's yearly L.A. Final Cut User Group gala bash. If I haven't been coerced into taking tickets at the front door, then you'll find me at the cash bar.

I'd love to meet with any DV Info members at one or more of these events -- be sure to pre-register for the Vegas mixer and the DV Cafe -- but any of these would be a good rallying point for us!

Thursday night I hope to be back home in bed. ;-)

Charles Papert March 18th, 2005 12:39 AM

Change in schedule on my feature means I may just be able to dash down to Vegas after all, hope to see you guys there!

Chris Hurd March 18th, 2005 01:11 AM

All right, Chas! Now it's a real party!

Hugh DiMauro March 18th, 2005 09:52 AM

Speaking of NAB...

What's the deal with all of this hype concerning JVC's now "Affordable" HD arriving April 18 at NAB? I mean, slick, high profile ads showing this super-secret sihouette of a camcorder. Any buzz on what that might be?

My interest is piqued.

Oh, and when you get to NAB, check out Chris Hurd's hair. It's perfect. I mean, like, 1960's cop TV show perfect.

OOPS! I found the thread! HERE>>

Scott thank you for your usefull tips posted back a few days ago!

I was wondering about this conference, does anybody think it would be worth spending the $500 or instead I should save the money and buy myself a new digital camera?

""Digital Cinema Summit | Click here for details
Saturday, April 16 - Sunday, April 17
The fourth annual Digital Cinema Summit will focus on the motion picture industry's transition to digital technology. Content creators and motion picture professionals of all levels will come together to learn about all the latest developments in the realm of Digital Cinema from the visionaries and pioneers who are making it happen.
Who Should Attend: Motion Picture Producers, Directors, Cinematographers, Independent Filmmakers, Theater Owners""

Scott Anderson April 14th, 2005 11:15 AM

The panels seem pretty heavily skewed towards vendors and consultants, and studio executives involved in distribution technology.

I don't see that you're going to hear much in a one hour panel that you couldn't hear in a press release: "Barco is leading the way in Digital Cinema Projection Technology", "Sony Pictures is working with theater owners to transition to digital cinema" blah, blah, blah...

Unless digital cinema distrubution is your bread and butter, unless you live and breathe digtal intermediates and 2K projectors, I don't see much point in attending this conference. You'll learn much more by talking to the vendors about workflow and personal experience with projects they've worked on.

The sad truth is, there are no standards in producing, posting or distrubuting motion pictures electronically. The industry is still in a state of serious flux, and it will be until theater owners invest in digital cinema en masse, and some system or combination of systems emerges as a defacto standard.

Even so, because digital files are malleable, they can usually be transferred, uprezzed, downrezzed or converted from one format to another, so it doesn't matter - there are plenty of movies being shot on all flavors of Film, HD, even DV, and being posted on any number of different NLE's, color-timing hardware and software, and the like. 99.99% STILL won't get into Sundance, let alone get a distribution deal.

Yes, the waters are still muddy. No, I don't need a VP from Warner's or Product Manager from Christie to tell me that. If your concern is spending $500 on a new digital camera, wait until after the show - you'll have a wish list much bigger than $500.

Wow. That turned into much more of a rant than I intended. Sorry-four days until I hit the show floor, and I'm already getting jittery.

Edit: if I was going to register for any session, it would be in the Post|Production World Conference. There are so many specific sessions, that almost anyone who's involved with the production or post side of things could find something interesting. On the other hand, I find that after 3 or 4 hours of sitting watching someone lecture, I'm practically brain dead. That's why I never attend these sessions - it just doesn't fit my learning style. I find I've forgotten 80% within a few days unless I jump onto the program and do it myself. YMMV, of course.

I get in at near Midnight on Sunday and will be seeing things Monday, Tuesday
and leaving late on Wednesday. Shackling up at Paris.
We should all plan on hitting the Promax
party (poor Charles, I'll miss that guy) on Tuesday for a little bit. Decent prizes
and food are a good draw.

Alain Aguilar April 14th, 2005 05:43 PM

I think I will take your suggestion Scott. Being this my first trip there I might just enjoy and take advantage of everything else they have to offer. Like they say "test the waters!"

Scott Anderson's excellent NAB tips have now been immortalized on DV Info Net...

See http://www.dvinfo.net/articles/buyersguide/nabtips.php

Unfortunately I have a conflict on Tuesday night... I've already committed to helping out with the VASST Vegas User's Party, hosted by our own Douglas Spotted Eagle, but will *try* to run over to the Stardust for the tail end of the ProMax DV Cafe.

Of course on Wed. night there's only one place to be, and that's Horton's LAFCPUG party at the Stardust. I expect to remain sober only for the first hour of that thing. See you there,

Alain Aguilar April 15th, 2005 02:14 PM

So let me get this clear, there is one party on Tuesday at the Promax DV cafe and then LAFCPUG on Wednesday at 6 PM? How do I get to these places? Do I need reservations?

Michael Horton April 15th, 2005 02:22 PM

The FCPUG Network meeting and the ProMax event are both being held at the Stardust Hotel Conference Center. No need to reserve for the FCPUG Meeting but it is first come first seated. Promax likes you to register but its not necessary to get in.

Here is info on both events

http://www.lafcpug.org/nab.html

http://www.promax.com/Events/Cafe/

Both are must attend events if you are going to NAB. It will also give you a chance to see Chris Hurd dance and sing Texas Favorites during the FCPUG pre show

Chris Hurd April 15th, 2005 02:32 PM

And bring plenty of dollar bills, because the more you tip, the more I'll work it.

Alain Aguilar April 15th, 2005 02:42 PM

I'll tip 20s if I see this :

Touch right toe forward; Hold; Touch right toe side right; Hold; Step right foot next to left; Step left foot next to right; Step right foot next to left; Hold

:) Thanks for the info!!

Charles Papert April 15th, 2005 06:27 PM

Work committments have just trimmed my NAB time down to Mon. and Tues, flying out Tues night...too bad really. I'll still be making the rounds. Chris, see you at the Canon booth for our usual "no time to talk" talk...!

Chris Hurd April 15th, 2005 06:36 PM

Ack! Chas! No you will not see me at the Canon booth! On Monday I'll be roaming Central Hall; on Tuesday I'll be in South Upper. You've got my number; give me a call Monday morning, okay? Maybe we can meet at Panasonic or somewhere nearby...

Richard Veil April 15th, 2005 07:44 PM

Cool Chris, glad to hear you are in freelance mode! I will indeed call. I'm going to be checking out the Panasonic presentation on Tuesday afternoon.

Steven Gotz April 16th, 2005 01:06 PM

I can't make it, but the first ever "Premiere Pro User's Group" meeting will be held there.

Read about it here: http://www.stevengotz.com/pproug.htm

I am so jealous.

Terry Lyons April 16th, 2005 03:30 PM

Hi all, my wife and I will be there. My name tag will say TAG on it so if you see it please stop us. Hope to see you again Chris and Charles, and hope to see some new faces. Thanks again for this great site. TAG

Greg Boston April 16th, 2005 04:58 PM

Hope to meet some one one of these days.

Zack Birlew April 17th, 2005 04:19 PM

Well, I visited NAB this weekend and found that I should have come on Monday for all the exhibits and stuff. From what I saw, this is gonna be a BIG show, so wear your walking shoes guys! ^_^ I did visit the NABStore and got my T-shirt and I will return Monday to buy a few more things. Introductory Training DVD's, film books you wished Barnes & Nobles carried, all Final Draft versions, AVID Xpress Pro/Pro HD/Mojo, and several T-shirts were some of the things you could find in the store. Plus, at the entrance there were piles of Video magazines relating to several aspects of video production and they were all free. So, I'll be sitting in my dorm room reading my free issues of Videomaker, DV, Moviemaker, and all the NAB2005 product preview handouts planning my NAB2005 schedule for Monday. See ya there!

Craig Walker April 21st, 2005 09:49 AM

I was there. Tired and brain fatigued. :)

Enjoyed it though....
