Apple insider reports new FCP at NAB

The Apple Insider site has posted a story indicating that the NAB FCP Supermeet will be totally taken over by Apple in order to release the new FCP.

Big guns like Kevin Smith and Phillip Bloom have supposedly been bumped from the agenda so Apple can have the whole show.

Wow.

The Supermeet website has just been updated:

Tenth Annual Las Vegas SuperMeet || Final Cut Pro User Group Network

"Agenda (UPDATED!)

The Final Cut Pro User Group Network is excited to have a very special guest presentation at the 10th Annual Las Vegas FCPUG SuperMeet. Come to see a surprise sneak peek at something very special - you really do not want to miss this one!"

So it might not be the actual release. Just a "sneak peek" at this stage.

I wish I had tickets to the super meet.... I would love to see an Apple launch.

Their sold-out status appears to be only temporary. Keep checking.

This is going to be awesome... no better place to announce it. Congratulations Michael and staff!

All the cores and RAM on my Mac Pro have been waiting for this. Let's hope I can finally put them all to work.

David, I think that this might be very close to the actual release, as they're going to finally show it to people not under with the NDA.

Here's to wishing for the ability to natively edit AVCHD footage like Premiere, Vegas, Edius and the like.
Come on Apple step up.

No one bigger than Apple could've bumped Smith, Bloom, Avid, Canon and others off the stage.

Re: Apple insider reports new FCP at NAB

I've always been intrigued with Apple's marketing strategy.

1. Build up application support for your hardware by encouraging other companies like Adobe, Avid, Autodesk to develop on your platform and charging pretty hefty licensing fees.

2. Compete directly with those same companies and bump them off the stage. :)

I look forward to seeing what Apple rolls out in their demo of what we presume is FCP X, but you gotta know that those other companies have got to be a little frustrated.

Maybe they'll just be telling us that big Steve doesn't see any more future for AVCHD than he does for Flash and Blu-ray :-)

If you are like me, expectations for an event like this can start to run really high.

I think I'm going to step back a bit and take the wording on the SuperMeet website literally as was suggest in a post above. This is likely going to be a "preview", with Apple's typical "summer" or "fall" generalities as to release date.

I'm sure there will be some good stuff shown, but much like planning your next production schedule around the upcoming Convergent Design Gemini, there will be some patience required. We'll still have months of work to get through with the tools at hand.

I'm thinking if I lower my expectations that it ends up being four hours of Steve Jobs trying to get FCP users to buy into a time share in Wyoming. That way whatever really happens, I won't be disappointed.

(FCS 3 had some nice improvements. I like that compressor can run & I can still edit, but I was hoping for sooooo much more.)

I was at the big-time Apple event at the Venetian (if I remember correctly) at NAB 2007, and it was just awesome! When they mentioned their partnership with RED, the place went wild.

I used to love those Apple events at NAB too. It will be nice to have Apple presenting something again.

I think the new FCP will be announced, and something tells me they'll be releasing an FC express/lite type app for ipads.

Live Type? I thought that was dead, rolled up into Motion. But you can install older versions of Live Type with FCS 3.

Background rendering (with use of all cores) is all I really want. If that makes it in, definitely upgrading right away.

The only company that upstaged Apple (at their last NAB in 2007) was RED when they showed off the first RED One cameras and the short film by Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp, "Crossing the Line." It was awesome! Projected via a 4K camera, and I was impressed with how friendly the RED crew were.

FINAL CUT PRO AND THE ROAD TO NAB | The Filmmaker Magazine Blog

Interesting Pre-NAB Editor's Lounge video (I only watched part 1), and I think some of the speculation is probably dead-on. But souped-up iMovie? I don't know... Aperture 3 has elements of iMovie, but isn't just a "souped up" version.

Dang, wish I was at NAB!

Tonight is the night people! I am very curious what Apple will give us.

http://applecritictv.blogspot.com/20...l-cut-pro.html
Interesting read with some speculation. I hope he is right, because it sounds great. No round-tripping anymore, everything in one app, iPad control interface and optimized to run on one screen.

Let's wait and see.

I tried clicking on it, but it was acting weird (thanks, Blogspot). Here's a better link, I believe:

The Apple Critic (TV): The New Final Cut Pro

I really hope that's how this will be, all-in-one. Man, that would be great! FCP, Soundtrack, Motion, Color, Compressor, all in one app. Great find, Floris!

Re: Apple insider reports new FCP at NAB

Heath, I couldn't agree more.

This is one of the things that I miss about Sony Vegas, in that I was able to everything from inside one app.
I still use Vegas form time to time via Bootcamp, but miss working in it every day. If Sony would have made Vegas for the MAC then I might never have switched. As I find FCP in it's current state clumsy and cumbersome.

If Apple finally has updated the code, Hell iMovie had newer code than FCP, and encapsulated everything inside one app, then I for one woudl be very happy.

My only concern for the future is not being able to capture tape. I am now tapeless in my workflow, but I still get tapes (mini HDV) supplied to my by other shooters from time to time, and not being able to at least capture tape could pose a problem.

I don't see why they should get rid of it completely. It *should* be a relatively straightforward technology to implement, and I can't see how dropping it would benefit the software in any other way.

But it's Apple, and they do love to sweep into the room and tell everybody how to do things.

Re: Apple insider reports new FCP at NAB

This quote on the Apple Critic site:

"But the Professional Editors won't like it, because it forces change, and Pros hate to change. If something works, and it is making you money, why take a risk on a new workflow/technology? This is the one feature that is prompting some people, who have seen the new version, to say that Apple is abandoning the Pro market. In fact, the reverse could be true - the pros could abandon FCP because it is too new. The newest versions of Avid and Premiere are evolutionary. The New FCP will be Revolutionary."

Certainly speaks to me, and I'm one of those "Why screw up my workflow" guys, but I'm also excited about new things, so let's see what happens.

Heath

ps-Sorry to do a huge "block quote," but I think this sums up what a lot of editors are thinking.

Even though I dont fear change I would hope it would at least RUN on Snow leopard. I hope they dont screw current owners and not let them upgrade.

I hope so, too. But history is with us that it'll likely work from Leopard on.
