Arri demoed an extended dynamic range display at NAB:

I gather it was more impressive than the 4k displays.

Interesting video, but what, exactly, was the point?

Are these products coming our way any time soon? Price? Delivery?

Are these simply Pro units at $15K - $35K a pop that no consumer will touch with a barge pole, or technology that will ultimately end up in a consumer product?

I notice the comparison was with a unit set up to mimick a CRT display, who uses CRT today?

My top of the line Pro 21" Hitachi CRT went out the door years ago as a space hog I simply wasn't going to allow to take over my house any more.

(The stupid thing is, in my remodelled study/ office it would have fitted just right, the desk space of a decent sized aircraft carrier, ho hum).

My new Dell 27" U2711, when set to sRGB. does me quite nicely and has pretty good colour, but it's only $1K NZ here, not spending $15K - $35K to get any better, thanks.

My understanding was that many of the displays currently hold to the limitations of CRT by using REC 709 and Arri seem to be arguing that there are elements of the image that are being lost by doing so.

I suspect consumer displays will go for the higher pixel count anyway, it's easier to market, as against more colour space and better dynamic range.
