Canon has some cryptic message and a countdown timer about some big announcement tomorrow.

I can't help but wonder if this is what's going on, because everybody but Canon have brought out 4K-capable cameras. Time will tell.

I'm guessing a 6k camera. I do have a very big hint, I won't tell you from where until it's officially announced to see if what I saw is correct.

With the FS7 around the corner and Canon losing out in the sub 10k camera department, I think this announcement will be huge. Either it's an affordable 4k cine cam or or a whole new camera lineup or..ah never mind, can't wait to find out.

So much for the build up. Is this for real? The C300 and C500 have wonderful features but really, this is ridiculous.

Canon isn't in the habit of pushing the market. They follow the market. They follow it from a distance.

The whole dSLR video thing was a happy accident that Canon never saw coming. A 6k video camera would be pushing the market a bit.

I will be quite surprised if they do something revolutionary. Its not in their nature based on their history.

In my opinion the reason why this thing is such a big deal for Canon USA, is because we're about one year (or less) away from the next Canon Global Expo, and this is their primary marketing message for that show. Hope this helps,

Don't know yet, but since there's been nobody talking about what they can't tell anyone due to an NDA with Canon, I ain't expecting any new hardware to be rolled out. I think it's like one web-site says, basically an advertising campaign, you know, create a "synergy" about their existing products.

Somewhat badly worded isn't it?

"Canon See Impossible" suggests they have no hope for the future. Canon See Possible would suggest the opposite.

They need a new codec to progress their video cameras. The current Mpeg2 that's in the C300 etc is a dead-end as it's limited to 1920x1080 30fps and 8 bit. AVCHD has many of the same restrictions. They have to either develop their own codec, which would be a first for Canon, or licence someone else's.

They're more likely to license XAVC than use a 4:2:0 MOV/MP4 format on their own for 4K camcorders. If anything, their DSLR division is more likely to use 4:2:0 MOV/MP4 than the camcorder division.

Or, they could completely surprise us with Cfast and internal RAW recording...

One can't ignore the fact that Canon stunned the industry with the 5D, but it seems they're way behind at times. A press release would've served fine for this announcement. The countdown wasn't necessary.

It's ridiculous, and makes you wonder what goes through the heads of marketing people sometimes. To me, it diminishes when they next run such a countdown if this is all that's at the end of it. And I agree with Dave - it's badly worded anyway.

When the C300 was announced it was a different matter, and at the time that really was something to make a big deal of. It's still pretty good, and likely to be used for quite a while to come - but, it's far from cutting edge now, especially with the latest from Sony.

They need to catch up with a 4k option now, the C300 chip is capable of it, it's as Alister says - they need a newer codec.

I'm a little worried that Canon will see the way forward as single-chip, and will feel that the XF200/205 are sufficient to fill that spot. Last February I attended the Cascade Show, and they had a 305 on display with no Canon staff near it. It was all about the C series.

YES, I ***GUARANTEE*** YOU CANON IS ANNOUNCING A NEW CAMCORDER.

Here are the FACTS.

1) Canon will be announcing a new camcorder in 2015.
2) It will record to a memory card of some type.
3) It will have a MINIMUM of ONE LENS. Maxiumum.... 100 lenses.
4) It will be black, or possibly silver. A red version is improbable, but likely.
5) Audio will be included. Possibly through a microphone - or a grammaphone. Unknown at this point.
6) It will have a 1/4-20 screw mount, somewhat inline with the lens, near the bottom.
7) there will be a zoom version that goes from a wide angle to something more of a telephoto.
8) Lens thread - Yes.
9) A battery and charger are rumoured to be included, as is a duck. Just rumour at this point.
10) High definition is probable and colour may be available in a firmware update.
11) A new version of this camcorder will be released exactly 5 years after this version. People will complain because it does not do something they expected it to do that Red does for 10x the price.

I understand I'll be blacklisted from the journalism community after this post, but I felt I owed it to the public to spill the beans.
