Not surprising, Canon seems to not be on the 4k bandwagon on their low end. FWIW, the 77D has better features than the 80D I paid $1,200.00 for recently at $899.00. If 4K is not important to your work, it will be a good video DSLR, it will be a great stills camera too. I have a 5D MKII for stills and I recently used the 80D instead for a portrait session and it's a great stills camera. I don't think Canon cares that much about the low end video market obviously. They sell still cameras that happen to shoot 1080. The DPAF is great with a gimbal or my Rhino EVO slider. But Panasonic, Sony and Fuji are selling a ton of mirrorless 4K cameras. Canon doesn't seem to care.

Canon takes their time. A year or two after the 5D2 was released, I asked the Canon reps at NAB why they don't put a DSLR sensor in a true camcorder body. They didn't have an answer.

Fast forward and look where Cinema EOS is today. They move at their own pace.

Very true, Jon. Canon is usually the last one to show up at the party. They like to take a wait and see approach.

Well, it's not like Canon haven't had a chance to see how the market for 4K camcorders is developing. As far as I'm concerned, they've waited too long.

I get the feeling that Canon are happy bringing out new cameras that offer only incremental improvements so long as people are willing to remain invested in their extensive ecosystem of lenses because nobody else offers that kind of range in lenses at the prices Canon typically charge.
