In an unusually low-key announcement on Mar. 8, the Tokyo technology and entertainment giant posted details about the new portable video player on its Japanese-language Web site, eschewing the usual over-the-top glitz of a major product launch.

Better late than never comes the video Walkman, a set of three models that can play videos vertically or horizontally on the 2-inch LCD panel at a QVGA resolution of 240x320.

wow---not!

I think it would be cheaper to buy a PSP and high capacity memory card. The PSP has a bigger screen, has more functionality, too, with it's game play, UMD movie play and Internet connectivity.

So Sony, why bother?

I was thinking the same thing, but Sony is basically killing off UMD video. Nobody wanted to pay that much for a movie they probably already have on DVD.

Anyway, the iPod is the way to go, or the PSP with a big memory card or two as you say.

Is it just me or is this just an

- extremely overprized ipod,
- with lower resulution,
- a codec noone else would ever want to use
- and about only 10 % of the capacity you get in a normal ipod?

I wonder how it will compare to the pqi mPack's 80GB player that can record from external sources, etc.? I got mine in exchange for a dining room table, so I may be biased...

There is a good possibility that Sony is going to release a PSP with a Samsung hard drive built in, and I really hope that becomes true. With the potential the PSP has, I can’t believe Sony would attempt to release a video walkman. For there own good, Sony should just toss that idea out of the window and pay more attention to the PSP.
