import archived movie from video-DVD
 

Boy, I did it this time... I used iDVD to burn a few different projects onto video-DVD. Unfortunately, I've lost my original clips that were to be converted for internet video. My goal is to "rip" my projects out of the DVD to be properly archived.
I've purchased Quicktime MPEG-2 and imported the muxed video_ts files, but all I can retrieve is the video with no audio. I know there has to be a way to get my audio back as well, but don't know how. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations?

I assume you are on Mac? The question is what stream the audio
is. It can be AC3, PCM or MPEG audio (it could also be DTS but
iDVD surely does not support that)

What you need to find out is in what format the audio stream
is. Then you can know what you need to do. You will alsmost
always need to demux the program stream (VOB file) to its
elementary streams (video, audio) and then if needed convert
those into another format.

In what program did you try to load the VOB file?

I'm on Mac... sorry, forgot to mention that. I used the Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback Component with the understanding that it would do the job. Apparently it will not import AC3 with the VOB file, so maybe that is the stream? That wouldn't make much sense considering it was created with iDVD, but I'm sure its possible.

How do I find out what audio format was used?

That I cannot tell you. I'm not on a Mac myself. Either iDVD tells
you what format the audio stream is when you create it or you
need to find a program / tool that can tell you what the stream
is when you give it a VOB file. I do not know such tools for the Mac.

I'll do some research and hopefully find some information. Although, at this point its looking like I'll just have to rebuild the movies. Fortunately they're each less than a minute.

One thing I considered trying was to run a cable from the line-out of my computer into the analog-in on my camcorder and recording the audio onto mini-dv. Then capture into Final Cut and piece it together with the video. Would that work? Even so, it sounds a little rigged and I may not even try.
