Emoticon Option?

Chris, I know that you don't allow the use of emoticons on DVi. But, you have a dedicated page explaining what they are and showing the code for each one. I used to not like them but started to on another unrelated industry board and found that they really do help to convey your emotion about a post and can be quite funny when strategically placed in comments. Any plans on activating this feature anytime soon? Thanks.

As long as I'm involved, this will remain a smilie-free zone.

In my opinion we should strive to communicate effectively, to the point where there's no need for 'em.

No problem understanding your emotions.... you're "blue."

I admit to being a smart-aleck and the occasional emoticon helps a bit. But many sites get carried away with them. So perhaps we should just do without.

Andrew Todd February 19th, 2006 03:53 PM

i agree no smilies ;)

James Emory February 19th, 2006 08:18 PM

I wish we could at least use the one that grins. That's my favorite. I don't understand why that page exists if we can't use them.

Chris Hurd February 20th, 2006 01:10 AM

That page exists because it came pre-configured with the forum software. If we did smilies, we'd be just like every other message board around. Like I said, the challenge is to communicate effectively without the need for visual aids. It's a good skill builder for us video people.

I can understand the no smiles, but no frowns??? Jeez!

I agree with the absence of anything that would transform this fine board to something Messengerish.
I suppose we'll just have to proceed with regular text to convey our message.
Jimmy.

I am letting this one sink in abit. Communicate without visual aids... in a video forum... hmmmmm.... :P

Chris Hurd February 22nd, 2006 10:59 AM

Yes indeed, communicate without visual aids, in a forum about video, which relies solely on its exchange of text as its primary communication medium. As people who are "all about video" to one degree or another, don't you think it's important that we cultivate effective communication skills without visual aids? I'm not impressed with one-trick ponies. Show me a video person who can get their message across even without video. Not that's impressive.

feb 22, FIRST DRAFT

1. INT. ANDREW'S WORK - COMPUTER DESK 1.

A normal day at ANDREW's work where he's slacking away as normal bored on CHRIS HURDS'S DV INFO .NET Site instead of working. The sound of people typing and working away like andrew should be doing as well resonate through the cavernous-like call center. Andrew notices Chris's post about being able to express yourself without a camera. Andrew starts to type furiously constantly checking over his shoulder hoping his boss won't notice he's not working.

ANDREW
I CAN express myself without a video camera..see?

Andrew posts and constantly refreshes the page, realizing his depressing addiction for internet contact through an online community about cameras.

THE END (to be continued in an unexciting sequel, and a equally uneventful prequel)

Chris Hurd February 22nd, 2006 12:02 PM

Actually that was pretty good! Now get back to work.
