DVD-9 recordables are coming soon from Sony and Phillips.

Does anyone know how the layer breaks are going to be handled in software and hardware? Are we going to need Adobe Encore in order to make dual-layer DVDs? What about copying existing movies?

My understanding (I've been told I'm wrong by one person but I am not convinced) is that burning software should be able to put the layer break at the beginning of any title set (VOB) file. If that's the case it shouldn't matter what software you use to author as long as it physically lets you do projects longer than 4.7 GB (which some don't). Putting the break at a chapter point, however, would require specialized authoring software.

Does anyone know for sure how this is going to be handled?

I'd say that in this point in time this is anyone's "guess". Since no
dual layer burner is out yet with not software to support it either,
who knows! Traditionally you will need software that supports
layer break indication indeed. I wouldn't be suprised if these new
systems need that as well. But the burning software (like Nero
perhaps) might make it easier as well. No one knows yet.

And to anyone who likes to say that layer breaking is already
supported in their DVD authoring program: that's for DLT tape
output at this point in time!

Nero is already there (maybe). At the +RW Alliance area in CeBIT, reporters got a picture of Nero open reporting the 9GB line. I just cannot remember if I saw this at Tom's, the Inquirer or where ;)

As far as I can tell Nero will burn as far as the burner tells it it can burn. If you gave it a Bluray disk and Nero supported Bluray drives it should support the large disk size.

The layerbreak is still the issue. DVD programs like Maestro only support the layerbreak insofar as the DLT mastering is stopped when appropriate so you can pop in the next tape. The compilation process doesn't give two hoots where the layerbreak is. So any authoring software out there that will allow a project bigger than 4.7 GB should compile title sets that can be put on dual layer disks if the mastering software supprots it.

I guess we'll see soon enough. I was just hoping someone knew what kind of authoring software we'd need to author with. I have Maestro but no DLT. But if I can generate title sets with Maestro that the burning software can do the layer break properly for, then I'm all set.

The folks at Ahead have to code the support into the application along with the device information. That tends to be the reason for so many sub-point releases of Nero, adding new burners.

It's a great piece of software. Unfortunately it has a nasty tendency to crash my computer with blue screen of death. I don't know if it just doesn't like my motherboard, or burner, or combination thereof or what.

Crashes while using burner software are usually the result of an older aspi driver. Not sure I could tell you how to fix it though. But you may be able to find support at the Nero site using aspi as your search string.

Actually, anyone who has a Pioneer A-06 or a A-07 drive already kind of has a DL burner. Pioneer had a demonstartion a while ago where they burned a DL disc using a stock Pioneer A-07 drive with only a firmware upgrade. I highly doubt that this firmware upgrade will be made available to the public because then they wouldn't be able to sell everyone new DL drives.

That's an old news thing that has been covered extensively. But
in the end it wasn't just a firmware upgrade as Pioneer first
claimed it was. They also had to change some other things (not
much though).

And even if they did had just a firmware update no-one outside
Pioneer does so the statement is still very true. There is no
dual layer burner + supporting software as of this moment. It's
going to get here really soon, but it isn't NOW.

The newest DVD authoring software slated to hit is the new DVD Architect 2. Hopefully it will have support for dual-layer authoring. *fingers crossed*
