DVD burner help
 
Hello. I recently got a new computer, and took my DVD-RW drive from the old case, and put it in this new one.

Now, in the old case, it worked fine.

In the new one, not so much. It's there, the computer acknowledges that it's there, it will read discs just fine, but I just found out that it won't write to them. I thought maybe it was specific to the new copy of Nero I just bought, but for fun I tried to burn with Roxio, and got an "incompatible media" message.

I'm using fujifilm blank DVD-Rs, just like I used before. I'm staring, right now, at a disc I burned a while back (in the old computer), that is also a Fujifilm DVD-R, so I don't understand how they could be incompatible. I just bought some new discs, and the only difference is that these new discs say "up to 8x write speed". Could that make any difference? I didn't see any other fujifilm DVD-Rs when I was shopping, and figure they'd all burn at the same speed, no? The disc that I burned successfully was done a few months ago, so maybe the discs just have different print on them now? I don't know. Anyway. . .help! Thanks.

Oh yeah. . .new computer is a Dell, P4 2.8 Ghz, 1 gig ram. Burner is, according to my device manager, an "NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A". Someone on the forum recommended it, and it's worked fine until now.

fujifilm dvd-r's have been manufactured by at least a couple of different companies in the past, but that shouldn't be an issue.

how about the dvd-r/w that came with the drive? have you tried to write to that disc... did you set the master/slave correctly on the drive when you installed it? the best way to do it is to put the drive on it's own ide channel, as the master.

just for drill, update your nero by downloading the latest version via their website.

If you can read discs, the jumpers should OK. It is possible to cause some speed problems if you don't turn on DMA mode or you get the drive cable in backwards (assuming it is a PATA drive). I can't check my WinXP machine right now ('guessing that's your OS), but you should find an UltraDMA option under your IDE controller in Device Manager (bonus tip: it should probably be enabled for your hard drive(s) as well).

Your problem may be disc media. My 4x Sony burner can be picky about my 8x DVD-R Taiyo Yuden discs, and occasionally fails the power calibration stage when I try to burn a disc. It seems that powering down or burning at 1x solves it. 4x TY discs work flawlessly, and I have burned many of each.

It's possible that Fuji changed to a new supplier who's disc chemistry isn't agreeing with your burner anymore (I see that yours should be good up to 16x, so it's not a speed incompatibility like mine). Any chance you've got an old Fuji disc still lying around that you can try? Do CDRs still burn OK? What about a different brand of DVD-R's? What speed are you trying to burn at?

I don't think there are any old discs lying around. . .I'll look, but I went out and bought new ones 'cause I couldn't find any.

I'm sorry. . .I couldn't find an option for ultra dma enable under the IDE controllers/DVD controllers in the device manager. Where be it?

Also. . .I tried to burn on a memorex CD-R. . .and it worked! I got a wonderful, crappy looking VCD (as expected), that played in a regular DVD player.

In WinXP and Win2KPro Device Manager look under "Primary IDE Channel" or "Secondary IDE Channel," depending on which cable your burner is plugged into. There should be a "Transfer Mode" option listed in the "Advanced Settings" tab for both the master and slave devices, which should say "DMA if available." If it says "PIO Only," try changing it and rebooting. Most drives that don't support DMA mode won't be found in today's Pentium 4 machines.

On the other hand, if the burner is a SATA drive it may not have this setting, or it may be called something different. I haven't worked with those drives yet.

'Glad to hear that the CDR burn worked -- what speed did you use? As a side note, I've had reliability problems with Memorex discs. If your mileage is better, great, but that's my experience. That's why I use Taiyo Yuden for all of my media (it's a manufacturer's brand, not a relabeled brand that can change suppliers like your Fuji discs appear to have).

his nec has the typical ide interface, it's definitely not a sata.

there could be an issue with the norton type of virus scanner/firewall garbage software that is interfering and stealing bandwidth... turn all that stuff off when burning, use the task manager to see what background processes you have running.

Ok, so. . .here's the new deal. In Roxio, I can burn fine, apparently to either these memorex discs I just got, or the Fujifilm DVD-Rs, but Nero still doesn't like either one. I disabled Norton and zonealarm, but no help. I wanted to paste the error log into this post, but it's too long.

Roxio works and Nero doesn't? Weird. I just remembered that I had trouble with another Dell machine recently (stock Samsung CD-RW burner), but in that case Nero worked and Roxio didn't. It was a combination of DMA being set up wrong, using Roxio 7.5 instead of 7.0, and needing to update the firmware in the burner. Finally just bought Nero instead and it's been working ever since. I don't remember what version offhand -- I can check on Monday. OS was Win2KPro.

Maybe Nero needs to be reinstalled now that Roxio is working? What did you have to do to make Roxio work (your original post says neither worked)?

Dan, good call on the Norton tip -- I'd forgotten how much it can mess with things (I use AVG).

Uh. . .I don't think I did anything. I just tried a different DVD-R disc than the one I'd been using.

I guess even though nero wasn't burning, it was doing something to the discs I put in that rendered them useless thereafter, and I tried a useless one the first time I tried Roxio.

The DMAs are all enabled, by the way.

It generally is not a good idea to have both, Roxio and Nero on the same machine. Maybe there is a conflict and Nero does not have exclusive access to the DVD burner?

getting rid of roxio does sound like a good idea... same thing with norton, uninstall that turkey... you'll never be able to get rid of it totally, just do the best job you can, lol.

i use bitdefender, it's free... set it up to ask you when it wants to install the automatic update, so that it won't interfere with a dvd burn, or make sure you aren't burning when it's scheduled to update.

take a close look at the bad discs... they should have a small area burned around the hub, which would indicate that the burning process was started... they can't be used after that.

NEC is a good brand in my book. I would try re-installing the burner, and make sure you have all of the newest drivers and patches. Try NEC's site, and see if they have a forum there, it may be a simple solution.

So there it is. Hope I'm not an asshole for posting this. . .I don't expect anyone to read through every line, but I thought one of you more tech-savy types might know where to look for things, and skim it, or something. To my untrained eye, on this last post with the log, in the middle of the 16:38:58 section, is where I start seeing the words "error" and "fail" a lot.

You guys are saying maybe simply turning Norton off, disabling it, isn't enough, and it needs to be uninstalled? What about my Windows firewall, or my Linksys router? Any chance they could be interfering?

Well, I'll take a shot at that (don't yet know where it'll land though).

The first problem I saw was at [16:37:24] with a failed "Grab still image (AVStillSource)." 'Not sure what this means, but is Nero possibly trying to pull a framegrab of your video for a menu or something?

Next point of interest: "[16:38:53] Used disc space 0.15GB"
as well as "[16:38:57] DVDEngine ..Estimated size(overall)=153MB" and "..Estimated duration(overall)=55 sec." Is your video only a minute long, or is Nero reading it incorrectly?

Farther down I see "[16:38:58] NeroAPI Burn process failed at 4x (5,540 KB/s)," so it looks like it is using 4x speed... unsuccessfully. Since your discs are rated for 8x and your burner for 16x, can you set the speed to 8x and try again? Or maybe 1x? I realize this could be getting expensive with all of the coasters you're making.

That's what I deciphered from the log anyway. Maybe someone else will see something I missed (quite likely).

As for Norton, I don't know how much may still be active even when "disabled," so I can't offer much help there. Windows Firewall... I doubt it, but I could be wrong. Linksys router... (external via Ethernet, right?) shouldn't be a problem. Some guys keep their NLE system off of all networks, period, but I think that's just for extreme virus protection, which is very understandable. I have my system on a small home network with a dialup Internet connection through a separate firewall machine (running IPCop in case anybody wanted to know), but video is not my official job, so I'm willing to take a little bit more of a risk with my PC. Still, I don't think anything like that should be causing your burner to fail.

Other things to check: do you have DVD playback software installed? If not, some programs may be lacking an MPEG-2 decoder. This probably isn't the case, but it's worth mentioning. I think PowerDVD comes with Dell machines anyway.

Can you export your MPEG-2 files as elementary streams (separate video and audio files)? Maybe Nero would be happier with that.

Is there any way to get Nero to output a "DVD Folder" aka just create all of the VOB files and store them on the hard drive? If that is successful, try burning the resulting VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a data DVD (with Nero) and see what happens.

The movie I've been trying to burn is 3:43 long. . .don't know why it thinks it's 55 secs.

Yes, there was supposed to be a framegrab for the menu.

Norton actually seems to be catching stuff and helping me (I have Norton Internet Security, as well as just the Virus Scan), in a way that AVG never did when I used to have it. I'm kinda reluctant to just get rid of it.

Also, I don't edit for a living (at all), so I only have one computer.

I wanted to try doing separate streams, like you guys said. . .

I'm a little lost as to how to do that in Vegas, using the MainConcept encoder.

I guess I'd render the video as a "DVD NTSC Video Stream", and then do the audio as a .wav file?
