how to get the best quality out of a DVD to reedit?
 

i need to reedit a project that i dont have the source files to any longer i need to recapture from a burnt dvd and reedit some parts and burn it again .
i understand that the files are compressed allready but i need some tricks to get the best res through what i have to work with right now
is donwszing and putting the project in a smaller window with a thick border a good option/?

I use a bit of freeware called DVD2AVI. It will rip any and all VOB files into an AVI using the codec of your choice. I just had to use it this weekend because I had just finished an edit, was about to deliver it to the client, then she asked if I could include a home video of her husband proposing to her. I had just wiped the raw files from my hard drive, so I had no choice but to rip the entire DVD and add the footage, then rerender. The quality of the final product is fine, but I wouldn't want to do a second generation rip.

The original DVD2AVI had unfixed bugs. You should now use DGMPGDec, which is DVD2AVI with a bunch of bug fixes. You can get it at http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html.

Also, you might want to check out this guide, "How to frameserve DVD/MPEG2/HDTV to an advanced video editor", that shows how to edit the DVD contents in Premiere (or another editor) without actually converting the DVD to an avi.
