Vortex Instructional DVD
 

Has anyone used the Vortex HC1 DVD with their A1 and if so, how helpful has it been?

I basically got it because I have not used a camcorder in 10 or so years AND because the HC1 manual is short and cryptic.

I have watched it several times, and depending upon how much you value your time, feel that it was a decent investment. The chapters on Menu Choices, Exposure and White Balance are where you get your money's worth.

It is a very professional piece. However, I would have liked to have seen a lot more things covered in the realms of technique (using the camera in the real world, how to get around it's limitations [besides implying "It's a consumer-level camera, live with it."] in low light, purple fringe, etc., and general information on getting the output to your PC and a DVD).

A good example is the Shot Trans menu item. They do a good job showing and explaining the main benefit of this feature: "rack focus". However, they don't go the next step to show how you can also add exposure, zoom and white balance information at the same time.

Obviously that would make a good second DVD on "Advanced Video with the HC1".

I also did not like the way it kind of came across like a Sony-blessed video, as in only Sony accessories are mentioned except for their plug for their own Warmcards (R) products (which are actually quite good). No suggestions on common competitive products like the RodeMic or even options for better on-board video lights -- that's what THIS forum is for! 8-)

There is also a competitive product out there for about 1/3 more in retail cost (but includes 2 DVDs, I believe and can also be found on Ebay for much less if you dare to trust your Credit Card info. with Ebay and PayPal). On the surface it appears to be much more of a DIY production then HandOnVideo, but since I have not seen the actual video, I can't say.
