Can anyone tell me why or why not to buy these models? What DVD burners have people had success with?

Thanks for your time,

What platform are you using, Mac or PC? I use a Pioneer A05 and have been very pleased with its performance.

I like my 2 Pionner A04 units so much I plan on buying 2 A05 units soon. Pionner has been doing DVD-R/-RW for some time and they are the standard on Mac, although I use a PC.

ii recently added the A05 internal to my G4 and have been very pleased with its performance.

Would like to know what the major difference between the Pioneer A06 and the A05? Thanks

I use the Sony external 510. With only 40 DVD's under my belt, I can't say I have a lot of experience. But this one has yet to make a coaster.

I've been using MyDVD 5.0 which is a solid and reliable program as long as one doesn't ask it to handle 15 chapters. Then it gets a bit shaky with the navigation. But it still burns good DVD. You just sometimes cannot get to a specific location in as direct a manner as one would expect.

Trying out the demo versions of DVD Workshop and the new Adobe product in the next few days. DVDiT! seems to be a loser and has failed to operate too many times for my taste.

Charles, to the best of my knowledge the only difference is in the read/write speed. The AO5 is only 2x and the AO6 is 4x.

Right now, GoldenRom (www.goldenromonline,com) has the Pioneer A06's for $179. Did you catch that Santa? HINT HINT!

thanks. Yep Keith, got it loud and clear.

Here's a website you should definitely check out: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

This website has tons of reviews and user comments on all types of DVD players, burners, DVD-R's, etc.

Plextor

I bought a Plextor 708A, dvd +r and rw and -r and -rw, and it burns DVD-R at 8x. It was less than $200 (had to pay shipping). Cnet gave it their highest rating...I haven't burned a coaster yet. And using the bundled software (Roxio's) you can automatically adjust the quality so your entire project will fit on one disc.

I burned a wedding that I'd shot, and the couple was so impressed they wanted me to make 12 of them.

Hehe...

Has anyone mentioned that DVD-R/RW devices meet the MPEG spec an the +R/RW do not? I was quite displeased to see a friend buy a "+" device to cut his DVD movies, and he was not aware.... this was highlighted in one of the DV mags recently, along with a note that some incompatabilities between + devices can be thwarted by "finalizing" the DVD when closing out the burn.

HTH,

Jerry,

What MPEG spec compatibility are you referring to? I have no
trouble playing DVD+R movies made by friends on my new Sony DVD player. However, I have met quite a few devices, both DVD players and computer DVD-ROM drives, that don't like DVD+R.
My DVD-R experience has been way more positive.

"Charles, to the best of my knowledge the only difference is in the read/write speed. The AO5 is only 2x and the AO6 is 4x."

Nope, they are both 4X burners, the AO5 only does DVD-R/RW but the A06 will burn both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW
