Burning DVDs Directly from Canon GL2 to a Computer DVD recorder

I just purchased a Canon GL2 and the tape mechanism refuses to accept a tape with only 20 hours of record/play time on the camera. It is covered under warranty but I will have to go without it for 3 weeks. I need it next weekend. I have a new Dell Inspiron 1505 Duo Core with a DVD burner and firewire. The operating system on the computer is Windows XP Media, and the other relevant software is Roxio Creator 8, Serious Magic Visual Communicator, and Techsmith Camtasia. How do I burn a DVD directly while videoing with the Canon GL2 and not save to the hard disk first.

Your computer is not going to be able to cache/buffer DV on the fly to burn straight to a DVD without storing data to the hard drive...

How come you can't save it to the hard drive, then burn?

Thanks for the info.

I need to video a two day class which is a minimum of 6 hours a day. This is 80 to 90 gig per day and it took me 2.5 hours to burn one hour of recorded class on a DVD. I have 45 gig left on my hard drive and I may be getting another 100 gig drive this week with at least 70 gig available. I will have to swap drives at lunch break and burn dvds all night long.

you just get one of these cheap standalone dvd recorder and press the rec button.
that's all... and in low quality mode, you can get as much as 3 hours of recording per disc.

Took Your Advice

Thanks for your help I took your advice and bought a Cyberhome DVD recorder with progressive scan, a tv tuner and firewire connector for $92.99 at Best Buy it records up to 1 HR 55 MIN STANDARD play and finishes the DVD in second this would take alot longer using my laptop to burn a DVD.

Thanks again
