Software that can use gl2 dv control for capture to laptop
 

Is there software that will alow me to capture video to my laptop by pressing the record button on my video camera similiar to the way a dte works? It would be nice to not have to use the laptop to start recording onto the hard drive.

Will you have a tape in the camcorder, too? If so, I can help :)

If not, it wil be difficult because pressing the button on the camcorder doesn't send anything to the FireWire interface. To use FireWire, you have to monitor the transport state (record, play etc) of the camcorder and respond accordingly.

There is a remote possibility that some camcorders may do it (I haven't come across any) but it would be an undocumented feature that the standard FireWire drivers wouldn't understand - i.e., custom drivers would be needed.

Yeah, I had planned on using a tape at the same time just for backup but I want to trigger the recording on the laptop at the same time as the camera.

Set up the software to capture to file from your camera and enable Smart Device Control. When you press Record on your camera, capture will start.

If you intend to start and stop then you will want to capture to separate files. To do that, enable Embedded Data Processing and, within the configuration window for the embedded data processing, enable Scene Detection. This time, whenever you start recording a new file will be created with a timestamp in the name.

BTW, with this version you can also capture to raw DV format should you need to share the files with FCP users, for example.

Wow, that works great. Its exactly what I needed and it seems to work with any camera, not just my gl2. Thanks a lot.
