Is there other ways to use our laptop as a recorder? I mean think about it. My 2014 Macbook Pro is a beast. I found a device called INOGENI 4K2USB3 that will allow you to to capture/stream 4k video via HDMI on your computer via USB 3 recording in prores. Now it’s not the most portable idea. But for studio shooting you could make this work. If you had a 20ft HDMI cable, a 2tb portable hard drive and this device, your looking at maybe $550. But the question is can the FS700 output 4k via HDMI and if not is there a SDI to thunderbolt adapter?

Also What if you could do this with your iPad/ Android tablet? (some of them have 4k displays) Wouldn’t it be nice to use your iPad as a monitor/recorder.. recording to like a My wireless passport hard drive.

No, the FS700 does not have 4K HDMI. The Sony A7s DSLR does though.

There are no SDI RAW to Thunderbolt adapters yet, only HD-SDI. So no, there is no easy solution to capturing FS700 4K to a computer, only the Odyssey 7Q with the Sony RAW software option is portable and convenient enough at the current time.

There is for sure not enough power in an iPad or Android tablet to encode 4K video if you're using the CPU alone at the quality you would expect for a proper post-production workflow.

Also, I know where you may be taking in some of the "4K" marketing when it comes to tablet/phone screens. They're not 4K, they're 2560x1440.

I'd wait for Blackmagic Thunderbolt 4K ready HDMI mini converters instead of using this hardware. ProRes may be managable with a high end i7 in the Macbook. You will need a Thunderbolt RAID as well as 4K ProRes runs around 880Mbps.

With all this hassle, it is so much easier to get an Odyssey 7Q+, purchase the Sony RAW option, and start shooting in RAW and 4K ProRes right away with the FS700.
