Hi Paul!

1. Copy CF directories to computer
2. Create new event in FCPX
3. Drag directory(s) into FCPX event
4. Sort clips and keyword accordingly
5. Show only clips to be used in event browser, right click, and transcode to ProRes

For low-priority projects, FCPX handles the native H.264 files just fine, but I've found the program to be a bit problematic on more complex edits. Sorting the native files saves some space on the hard drive by not converting every clip to ProRes. If you want to add things later, you can intercut the two codecs or transcode individual clips if necessary.

Not perfect but it renders fast and I'm starting to like the new editing conventions, such as compound clips. One more piece of advice, if the clips to a project go offline, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to reconnect them. Just drag the original files into the event missing the files and everything will reconnect.

Ok, so two ways that I've found works to do this when media seems to have gone missing:

#1 - In the project selection screen in FCPX, click once on a project to select it, and then click the little "i" for info on the right hand side of the window. Then click on the "Modify Event References" button and then click "OK". For some reason this worked for me the other day when my project wasn't seeing the clips.

#2 – If this doesn't work, and you should have a corresponding event for your project. When you click on the event, all the content will show up in red as "offline." If you know where the original files are on your hard drive (like any good editor should), you can just drag all those clips from the Finder in to the event. The clips should come back online and your project will be ready to go. This happens most frequently to me with audio clips dragged from the desktop for example. Essentially "re-import" the clips and they should show up again without any duplicates.

Perhaps I could be of more help if I knew more. Are you having some issues?

Glad to hear. That David Pogue post answers a lot of questions as well, so thank you Konrad. Final Cut does assign a custom name to clips in a project, but in some cases I don't select the option to copy all my media into the Final Cut event and instead leave it in the original location on my hard drive array. I believe this is the reason why media sometimes goes offline in FCPX - when the original is moved. So while there is a great system in place to automatically reconnect media, sometimes the program needs a little more help when it isn't located inside the Final Cut Events folder. Just thought I'd clarify how the process works in my own workflow.

I mainly work with 60D footage, and use the same workflow as Nate except I transcode using the Proxy setting. After 5 projects it's been a winner workflow.
