I've installed the new FCPX update on my iMac system, my second system, and it appears to be working fine. As part of the process I had to update the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.6.7.

So I felt that was successful and have tried to do the same on my mac tower primary system. This is the system that was built for me by a local systems integrator but has never worked as smoothly as it should and still crashes several times a day. I finally gave up hoping the systems integrator would ever make good on the setup after a couple of years, which is a long story and I won't bore you with it here.

On trying the update on the tower system, though, I get a "panic" on rebooting after the update of the OS. This is before even attempting to install the FCPX update. I get the restart message and the system always goes to the "panic" screen and hangs there, requiring a reboot which results in another hang.

I had made CCC clones of the system drive before doing the update, so I can boot to one of those, then CCC clone the system drive back to itself, and everything works normally. If I try to update the OS I get the "panic" screen again and the cycle repeats.

I'm pasting the error report below. I'm well out of my depth in trying to make sense of the report. I'd appreciate any help I can get on what the problem is and how to fix it.

I think as a general rule it isn't possible to update Hackintosh systems with normal system updates. I've never fiddled with one but I have to assume Apple does their best to shut down whatever exploit was used to modify the system so it would boot on non-Apple hardware.

You should talk to your systems integrator guy because we don't have the expertise to sort out this specific kind of hardware issue in this forum.

I guess I wasn't clear - this isn't a hack, it's a Mac pro tower. The systems integrator installed the kona card and raid controller but the computer is a legal Mac pro tower.

Are the cards updated as well? Are the cards certified with the most recent 10.6? And all of your third party system add-ons? In the end you might need to do a clean install of your system OS from the master disks. Don't worry, it's not hard to do with Snow Leopard and there are instructions in the FCP 7 group.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone would be able to pick that out from the kernel panic report, actually. I'm working on a number of projects, shooting and editing, and was hoping to avoid a lot of trouble shooting right now. I expect I'll eventually have to work my way through possibilities just as you suggest, but probably won't have extensive time until well into December.

There's no huge rush for me, just hoping someone more knowledgeable could read the panic report and save me some time.

Update to OS 10.6.8 using Apple's Combo Updater. NEVER use Software Update. It may not reliably clean things up. Combo Updater will do a clean update of various components.

Generally though, Kernel Panics are hardware related. Pull all peripherals and third party PCIe cards out. Use the Combo Updater to update. BTW always Repair Disk Permissions before updating as well.

Any number of things wrong such as non compliant RAM as well so you want to look for and pull out any RAM that didn't come with your system.

All sounds like excellent advice and I'll take it when I get a few days in a row to deal with the upgrade. I assume if I keep a CCC clone of the system drive (I usually keep 2, one on a second internal drive and another on an external) I can always revert?

For that matter I've also considered putting in a new system drive and installing Lion, which I understand does support FCS 3.

Doing a clean install on a new drive would certainly help. Lion is fine although there's a few more kinks being ironed out. 10.7.2 is coming soon.

The cloned OS may well have cloned whatever the problem is.

I recommend the OS combo updater because it often cleans up bad parts of the OS. Software update doesn't always do the cleanest job of overwriting old bits so I generally recommend against using that ever.

A kernel panic is not a typical bit of OS issue. It's almost always linked to hardware but it could be a kext incompatibility with a third party hardware. It might also be non compliant RAM. I'd really suggest you should strip the computer down of third party hardware, peripherals, RAM and see what happens.

I'm having horrible kernel panic problems on my Macbook Aluminum Unibody (8 gb ram, 500 gb hd). I've changed the ram to three different sets and completely reinstalled Lion. Even my iMac had a kernel panic the other day. I'm not enjoying the Lion upgrade.

My experience with Lion has been fine on a 17" unibody MacPro with 8 gb RAM and a 2009 Mac Pro with 12gb. It's really hard sometimes to track the problem down but it's usually (as said before) a hardware issue. Sometimes with scanners or old drives. Is there a way to do a real clean install with Lion?

Just to wrap this up ... Turns out it was the Kona card drivers. I updated those, then did the combo update, and everything is running very well.

Good Call on the Kona Drivers. I heard something about that at a meeting here in NY about having to deinstall old AJA drivers before upgrading.
