Exporting 5.1 to DVD
 

Has anyone else experienced this?

In order to get the correct 5.1 channel configuration recorded to a DVD from FCPX I find it necessary to route the channels in FCPX as follows: Lf to Lf, C to Rf, Rf to C, LFE to Rs, Ls to LFE and Rs to Ls.This relates to the 5.1 playback from DVD and not to playback from FCPX. All signal routings are correct from DVD player to amplifier to speaker.

Never happens to me. Are you working with properly assigned 5.1 files? I get them messed up occasionally, usually the tracks are all mono and I have to figure out which is which. Not easy.

My methodology to confirm the incorrect routing was to create 6 mono files, Lf, Rf, C, Ls, Rs and LFE and assign them to 6 separate lanes in FCPX. Each lane was routed directly to its appropriate 5.1 output channel via the inspector, either by direct routing or by means of the surround panner. In both cases the resulting DVD playback was incorrect. However by routing as per my original posting the channels played back correctly on the DVD.

Are you exporting directly to DVD from FCPX, sending the project to Compressor or making a DVD from a rendered ProRes file? I usually make 5.1 BluRays for clients directly from FCPX and I haven't encountered any track problems. The last 5.1 DVD I made was a feature but it seemed OK last year when I made it.

The last time I had a track problem it wasn't the disc I made but the way the BluRay player was set up in the screening room. The projectionist had to do something with the OPPO BluRay player which was previously set up for stereo and then the discs played fine.

Thanks William. I am sharing directly from FCPX to make a DVD and I can confirm that the Bluray player is correctly configured for 5.1. Assigning the channels as per my original posting produces the correct results. If I export the individual 5.1 channels using Compressor things are OK. The project in question is to produce a surround recording of an organ recital and I would like to use FCPX to provide chapter markers, titles and info regarding the individual tracks
