Display monitor for 4k
 

I was pleased to find that my mid 2011 iMac (10.9.4) is able to play 4k 25p from a GoPro 5 black and 4k 50p 8-bit from a recently acquired GH5. I can also store the 4k files and a quick test with FCPX 10.1.4 showed that I could import and play the clips and do a lap dissolve. What I cannot do is see the clips in 4k. I have started investigating 4k display monitors and would appreciate any suggestions. I am assuming that the iMac will output 4k to a display monitor, is that correct?

I have a 43 inch 4K LG Monitor (LG 43UD79-B: 43 Class 4K UHD IPS LED Monitor (42.5 Diagonal) I LG USA), was not even that expensive (530vex vat) and has replaced my dual screen setup I had before. The monitor also has the possibility to connect 4 different computers and see them all at once in a 4 way splitscreen.

My 2013 iMac will output 4K 30HZ. My 2013 MBP Retina will NOT output 4K. My 2015 MB Air will output 4K both 30HZ and 60HZ which means in the UK I think 4K 25p and 4K 50p.


However Quick Time player will NOT play 10 bit 4K clips off my Lumix GH5.

When I edit in 4k speed is my priority so I use a proxy and clients get 1080p. In my view the most important part of monitoring is color grading/exposure, I don’t think viewing it at lower resolution impedes me. 4k tvs are coming down in price and if you want one...

Thanks for the replies,

As a retiree my video interest is basically a hobby and I enjoy making various bits and pieces to help facilitate the recording my natural history subjects. Fortunately I do not have worry about clients or deadlines. Ronald, the date on your link was July 28, 2017 which sounds pretty up to date to me. Noa, I will look out for the Pal version of your monitor, it could be a good way to go but is larger than I would prefer.

I have to qualify my surprise observation with which I started this thread. Today we had a few kangaroos feeding very close to the house and to save time I did not set up a tripod but instead tried a couple of hand held GH5 4k60p 8-bit shots. These clips played back very poorly. My previous test shots that played back without problem were from a tripod mounted camera and an almost static scene. Today’s hand held shots were too much for my iMac to handle.

And that's h264 compression for you and why proxy files are useful.

I dream in 4k! no lie... well maybe an exaggeration but can you blame me?
