cant get my homemade firewire drive to work.

i bought a maxtor 160 gb hardrive and an ADS dual link case for it. connected the hd right because whe i started my mac disk utility came up and the drive was listed under my main drive on the left, but how do i get it so i can access the firewire drive? do i need to format the drive? if so how do i do that (step by step please). could it be i didnt set the drive us as a slave with the connector?
when i click on information on the disk utility for my drive says
Disk Description says: ADS technologies
Connection Bus: Firewire
Connection IDL and the number
Disk Write Status: Read/write

it doesnt say weither it is a slave or not. what do i have to do i need this drive set up ASAP.

What version of Mac OS are you running?

Also, can you post a link to the specific 1394 enclosure you are using?

In general, yes, you do need to initially format the drive. How you do so depends on your OS version.

Is the drive appearing on your desktop at all?

i am running os x version 10.2.3
here is the address to the drive case i bought http://www.adstech.com/products/DLX185/intro/DLX185intro.asp?pid=DLX185 . the drive is not appearing on the desk top, but it does show up on the disk utility right under the main hard drive.

Good. Then format and name the drive with the Disk Utility and you should be good to go.

Alfred Tomaszewski June 26th, 2003 09:52 AM

how exactly would i go about formating and naming this drive?

Ken Tanaka June 26th, 2003 10:11 AM

Select the drive, click the Erase tab in the utility. (Use your Mac OS Help facility for more detail.)
