HDV render in RGB or YUV?
 

I'm shooting HDV and editing in fcp. The final output will be burned onto blu-ray and displayed on a 1080p digital projector and lcd televisions.

HDV is natively YUV and if I understand correctly then digital projectors and lcd televisions display RGB color space.

So, should I check the "Always render in RGB" box in the sequence preset tab if the final output will be in rgb? Or should I just work with the footage in yuv? Would this cause color innacuracies when displayed on a lcd tv or digital projector?

I'd say if you bring the footage in as YUV then stay with YUV. Otherwise you would have different color space from the direct portion of the footage against rendered portion, you would see different color output between them.

right i'd think you'd have to render all the footage into rgb - but would this be the most ideal way to maintain color fidelity between edited footage and displayed footage?

If you are going to be burning to BluRay you are either going to use MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, both of which use Y'CbCr ("YUV"). There is no getting around it.

Realistically speaking, is there ever true fidelity between what we see when we edit and what we see when it is displayed? Considering the possible variances in gamma and colour set-ups from screen to screen, such control is a pip dream. If you are editing with a calibrated broadcast monitor, you have the best baseline but the chances of it looking the same on any screen are slim. In the real world scenario, you are going to have variances from slight to extreme, so I wouldn't stress on it too much.

Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? I have no idea, myself. However, I was under the impression LCD TVs were Y'CbCr.

Mike - perhaps I'm wrong about lcd's displaying rgb only. I read that somewhere online but don't recall where so I have no idea as to the legitemacy of that claim.
