What bite rate did you encode your data at?

Ryan Wachter October 11th, 2004 06:31 PM

I used the advanced quicktime on FCP 4

Jeff Donald October 11th, 2004 07:01 PM

Let's start a little simpler, are you making a data DVD-R or are you trying to burn an mpg2 DVD-R to play on a DVD player and watch on your TV?

Ryan Wachter October 11th, 2004 08:31 PM

Yes as a dvd, I was able to successfully burn it as a data dvd but when I had finished the film and had it made into a quicktime movie I was using the video function to burn it to dvd to use on dvd players.

Ryan Wachter October 13th, 2004 03:21 PM

so no one knows what I need to do...sorry Im definitely new to compression and video types.

Jeff Donald October 13th, 2004 03:31 PM

If you're using Toast, I think there is a quality setting in the Video Settings. Try lowering the quality.

Ryan Wachter October 14th, 2004 09:43 PM

I tried putting it down as far as quality...still stops at the same place....

I appreciate the help.

Peter TK Lee October 14th, 2004 11:50 PM

Hello Ryan,

Have you tried using iDVD instead?

Peter

Andrew Hogan October 15th, 2004 02:05 AM

Yes use iDVD if you don't have DVDSP to do your DVD authoring.
At least then you can make some nice menus to interact with when you play it in your DVD player.

Ryan Wachter October 15th, 2004 01:45 PM

I do have dvdSP and have transfered a quicktime FCP version to it. Will I have better luck burning it from there once I get the rest of the bugs out of the menu?

Peter TK Lee October 15th, 2004 06:05 PM

Hello Ryan,

What menu bugs are you referring to?

I think you should start with iDVD first to reduce the amount of effort needed to author on DVDSP.

cheers,
Peter

Andrew Hogan October 16th, 2004 01:04 AM

Use the quicktime version of your exported movie if you are going to finish it in iDVD

or,

Exporting out of FCP as an MPEG2 if you are going to author it in DVDSP.

But authoring in iDVD is much easier if you want to burn a DVD asap with little effort, but if you author it in DVDSP it can look more "Pro".

Ryan Wachter October 16th, 2004 09:09 AM

No Im not in a huge hurry to get it done...Id rather just have a nice dvd.
As far as exporting it, ive been choosing export>quicktime movie...> then I have been using those in DVDSP. Is this going to give me a good quality video? Can I make it better by exporting it in a different fashion?

By bugs I just meant things I didnt know how to use yet. I had just recently purchased DVDSP and am still working things out, still learning.

Ryan Wachter October 16th, 2004 11:10 AM

Ok, well the menu wasnt totally finished but I figued Id burn one and see how it comes out....and when it begins to burn I get this...

Recording engine: Device is not supported for the requested burn operation.

WHATS THIS MEAN!!!

Peter TK Lee October 17th, 2004 01:41 AM

Ryan,

Can you let us know your system setup including hardware and software? Also, what type of media you're using to burn?

Peter

Andrew Hogan October 17th, 2004 03:33 AM

Yes what version of DVDSP do you have? what OSX do you have and what is the DVD burner?

(Some of the new burners are not supported by the older operating systems.)

You should get much better quality video using MPEG2 and DVDSP compared with iDVD.

If you export from FCP using quicktime conversion - MPEG2 - you can get very very nice quality. Exporting using compressor will take longer to encode, is a bit more complicated but should ultimatley give you the best quality video.

Ryan Wachter October 17th, 2004 10:43 AM

I am using OSX panther
I have a plextor burner
I am using DVD studio 2

Ryan Wachter October 17th, 2004 06:31 PM

Ok exporting MPEG 4 I was able to burn with toast np...but on a full TV the picture is still not sharp...to say the least.

Andrew Hogan October 17th, 2004 06:43 PM

MPEG4 is for web use i believe so not good quality.

When you make the MPEG2 file and DVDSP project, click the Build button and see if you can build the DVD onto your Hard Drive (It should create a Video_TS folder on your HDD) and then try opening that and playing it with the Apple DVD Player software.

If that part is sucessfull you can burn it from DVDSP or Toast.

Ryan Wachter October 17th, 2004 06:51 PM

There doesnt seem to be a MPEG2 option...just MPEG4...

Andrew Hogan October 17th, 2004 06:58 PM

It should be under export using Quicktime conversion, then slect MPEG2. It is not normally in FCP when you install FCP but when you install DVDSP you get this extra new option appearing in FCP. Maybe you will have to install DVDSP again. As it did disappear on me once after installing a FCP update

Jeff Donald October 17th, 2004 07:25 PM

If you reinstall FCP after installing DVD SP, you'll lose the mpg2 option. Toast also has an option to burn a DVD from the Video_TS file.

Ryan Wachter October 17th, 2004 09:09 PM

Ok, so what do you suggest I do? Should I reinstall DVDSP or something else?

Jeff Donald October 17th, 2004 09:28 PM

I would suggest reinstalling DVD SP.

Ryan Wachter October 17th, 2004 11:37 PM

Ok, well i placed the icon in the trash and reinstalled DVDSP and still that is not in an option...

Peter TK Lee October 18th, 2004 03:28 PM

Hello Ryan,

Is mpeg2 option greyed out?

I suggest the following (follow if you think it's worth it):

1. delete the preference files (.plist) of both FCP and DVDSP

2. setup your preferences for FCP (at least the location of the scratch disk).

3. try mpeg2 option again

4. if the above doesn't work, then remove both applications and reinstall.

5. check again.

Peter

Ryan Wachter October 18th, 2004 10:35 PM

No there is no Mpeg3 choice at all.

I have tried trashing both the DVDSP and FCP icons, then reinstalling....FCP first. I noticed there is a box that is mpeg2 I went to install that and it says there is already a better copy of it on the computer. When I searched for it the only place i found it was in the reciept folder and it wouldnt do anything from in there.

i still dont have that option in FCP, I have:
3G
AIFF
FLC
Quicktime movie
u LAW
AVI
Wave
DV Stream
Still image
Image sequence
MPEG-4
system 7 sound

Thats it...

Jeff Donald October 18th, 2004 10:39 PM

Delete the receipt and reinstall.

Ryan Wachter October 18th, 2004 11:36 PM

I went into the receipt folder and removed the box labeled mpeg2 and reinstalled it from DVDSP. I still do not have the mpeg2 option in FCP...

I do want to thank everyone for thier help thus far.

Jeff Donald October 19th, 2004 05:46 AM

Did you get the box again, like above? Did it say you still have a newer copy?

Ryan Wachter October 19th, 2004 10:38 AM

No, it did not say I had a newer version. Once I had placed it in the trash can it allowed me to install the copy from DVDSP. However after I had done that there still wasnt the option in FCP4

Andrew Hogan October 19th, 2004 08:11 PM

FCP comes with the "Compressor" Application too. If you export using compressor you can create MPEG2s with that, if you have given up on the Quicktime MPEG2 converter....

Ryan Wachter October 19th, 2004 08:46 PM

Ill probably have to give that a shot...although i think I had once and when I click on compress using compressor nothing happens...
