mini VGA question
 

I have an eMac G4 with a mini-VGA port. Is it possible to use the Apple Video Adapter and connect it to a TV with RCA and be able to use "mirroring"?? Like as another screen??

I think your machine only comes with a mini-VGA to VGA. You might need to buy another adapter. If your machine came with it, then you should be fine.

Mind you, the TV in no way will be as clear as your monitor. The image will be very fuzzy.

But will it work as mirroring?

Mirroring is all it supports, even though the video card is capbable of spanning (acting like a second screen instead of just copying your current one). So it can DUPLICATE what you already have, but you will not be gaining anymore desktop/screen real estate to work with.

If you have one of the newer eMacs/ibooks...you can enable spanning with a little hack..

I did the "hack" to at work and now I'm in "widescreen" nirvana with the built in 17" CRT and analog input LCD at work side by side. No ill effects so far(it's been over a month...)

Don't worry...it won't hurt anything...Apple disables spanning on the low end Macs to distinguish them from the Powerbook pro lines.

Its a 1 Ghz eMac 17'' with 384 MB RAM. Is this "spanning" like mirroring? Could I use it as a second monitor?

Sorry for throwing in extra confusing information...

When I was speaking of the newer eMacs ability to do "spanning"--it refers to the ability to do extended desktop...you can drag windows from one monitor to the next. [This is via the hack of course.]

The eMac's default setting is mirroring, so with an attached second monitor--both monitors show the same thing.

Pick up the mini to s-video adapter if you want to hook up a tv, it also has a rca jack. I too ran the screen spanning program on a 1ghz emac and it works great!
