real time

hithere
i just got my hands on a G5 running final cut pro 3 to edit my film.
usually i would use premiere pro on a pc.
i notice that, unlike premiere, FCP won't render simple things like cross disolves in real time when previewing footage. Surely the mighty G5 is up to this! is this because we have an old version of final cut? or have i missed something?
many thanks,
alex

From what I understand real-time has gotten better with later versions of
FCP, however, I have no idea how to compare it to Premiere. I'm not using
either products myself.

Yep, you need to upgrade. Unless you need it immediately, wait for FCP 5 which should be available in 4 to 6 weeks. I used FCP 3 for several years on my G4's but got a dual 2.5 G5 a few weeks ago. IIRC, I found that my renders sped up by a factor of 2x in FCP 3. Since I have a big project due this summer I didn't feel I could wait for the new version so I went to FCP HD 4.5. This makes a huge difference. FCP 3 was not truly OS X native or multiprocessor aware. Now I find that very few things need to be rendered.

So if you can't wait for FCP 5 then go ahead and upgrade to 4.5, you'll see a huge improvement. Otherwise, you'll just have to be patient. You can't get 4.5 from Apple anymore, but other vendors should still have it; the upgrade from FCP 3 costs $400. Or if you wait, the upgrade to FCP 5 is also $400. However if you upgrade to FCP 4.5 now there is no discount on the FCP 5 upgrade, which would cost another $400 unfortunately...
