Help! DVDPro burn disc problem
 

Hi i just moved across from PC and Vegas to a MBP and FCP. Absolutely everything has gone smoothly from HDV capture from a V1, to editing, to color correction, to audio mixing. Am so glad I moved across.

But when I burn a DVD using the std HQ template, the disc plays on my MBP but doesnt on my philips consumer DVD player, nor my PC. Error comes up saying the disc is not playable or may be corrected. I've tried a DVD-R and DVD+R but to no available.

Has anyone here had this problem? Its crazy, how can a DVD disc play on the Mac but not anywhere else?

That's a curious problem.

What version of FCP are you using, perhaps version 7? How are you creating the DVD? With the Share function or Compressor and DVD Studio Pro? Are you using an HD-DVD compression preset instead of a SD-DVD preset? That would account for the problem as your PC and especially your DVD player wouldn't have the ability to recognize the file structure on the disk.

William, thanks a million, DVD Pro defaults to HD DVD when i started it up for 1st time ! OK so I admit this was user error, but why oh why would you default to HD DVD - I dont know a single person in the UK who ever used this format!!

So anyone else who gets this problem, just go into Preferences and change the default format from HD DVD to SD.

I moved to Macs about a year ago from Vegas on a PC - it's been a great transition for me too. One quick word of advice is that you'll find you will want to go into every section of FCS you work with and set the Preferences to match what you will typically need in all the options (FCP, Compressor, DVDSP etc.) - saves a lot of head scratching later! Lots of on-line tutorials to help with this stuff. Good luck!

Just so you know, HD-DVD codecs work on Blu-Ray discs as well.
