formating an External HD for use on mac and PC w/o limitation
I need to format my external HDs so i can have them read and write onto and from macs and pcs.
FAT32 will allow you to do that but size limitation is a killer. NTFS doesnt let you write to from a mac so what are my options and please walk me through doing it. if this doesnt work how can i transfer my 4 gig file from mac to my pc? |
What version of Mac OS X are you using?
Most likely you will have to use MacDrive 6 on your PC and format the disk in HFS+. http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/ |
It's been a few years since I tried this, but I had a firewire drive that was PC formatted. It mounted fine on the mac, however perfomance was affected and it would drop frames if used for capture or playback. This may have improved with newer versions of OS X. Do you just need to move files, or do you want to actually edit from the same drive using both the Mac and PC?

Or, if you're adventurous and you've got the $$$ and you need something a bit more reliable and less kludgy you can set up a small SAN for the PC and Mac. |
