How to stack Video automatically

Hello, I am using FCP 5 and I am having trouble with an effect that seems to be standard. On several demo clips I have a seen an effect where one video is running then a second (and sometimes third and forth) clip comes up too. (like here http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Tools....treme.html)The first clip is squished or squeezed over as the next clip comes in. I have had no luck trying to figure out how to do that on my own, and my FCP classes are a few months down the road. Can anyone steer me in the right direction with this?

Thanks
Todd

Todd, welcom to DVInfo! I assume you know that FCP allows multiple video tracks just put some clips on top of each other in kind of staggered pattern, then go to the first clip in your sequence and in the motion tab of the viewer you can set keyframes at the position and scale areas. turn on the view image and wireframe in your viewer. just set a keyframe on the frame you want the change to start, then a keyframe at the end fram and use the mouse to move and scale the clip however you want. Hopefully that all made sense to you :)

Time to get Kevin Monahan's book MOTION GRAPHICS AND EFFECTS IN FINAL CUT PRO. Explains this in detail rather well.

And there is no such thing as automatically...

I couldn't see the video because the link pointed to a .mac login page for me. However, it sounds like the effect you are describing can be achieved with a slide transition. Put the two clips together on the timeline and drop a push slide on the transition point. You will need to have a little extra footage to properly make the transition (that is, you cannot put a transition when the media clips have no in/out points. It's confusing to explain but if you don't understand, you soon will.) Double click on the transition to change parameters like direction and duration. Good luck!
