Mac OS 10.2.3 NOW Available

Mac OS X update 10.2.3 is avialable from software updater (system preference) a standalone updater has not been posted as of this post. Details on the update are here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107263 This has NOT been certified for use with FCP as of this post. I DO NOT recommend installing if your in the middle of a project. I will install it on a back-up system and report any problems.

Jeff

Edit> standalone installers are available here:

Ken Tanaka December 19th, 2002 09:02 PM

A cautionary note: MacFixIt, a prominent subscription site for Mac tech news and work-arounds, noted (today) that there may be a bug in this update. In a preliminary test installation their G4's iTunes failed to recognize their internal CD-RW/DVD combo drive.

A word to the wise: unless there's a specific fix in this update that you must have asap let the pioneers take the first volley of arrows between their eyes.

Jeff Donald December 19th, 2002 09:24 PM

It seems to have lost my iTunes Library. The MP3's are there, just no Library. If you're a big music fan I would back-up important iTunes Files before installing. It does recognize both of my burners.

Ken Tanaka December 19th, 2002 09:31 PM

SSSSSSSSSSSThwack! I think we just lost Jeff "Custer" Donald!

Have you tried FCP yet? Jeff? You ok, man?

Jeff Donald December 19th, 2002 10:02 PM

FCP seems just fine. I've played with it for an hour and it seems stable (no crashes or Kernel Panics). If anything it seems a little faster, playback seems smoother, less stutter. This may be due to the improvements, Apple mentions, to the Rage 128 drivers etc. and not FCP. No crashes and I'm going to do some editing with it tomorrow.

Jeff--

Forge ahead, brave soul.....you're making it a better world for the rest of us!

I'm still too chicken to upgrade from 10.1.5. Maybe when I get through all my pending FCP projects......

So far, I haven't seen any overwhelming need to do so.

Ken Tanaka December 20th, 2002 01:44 AM

I updated my PowerBook G4 1GHz to 10.2.3 .
iPhoto Library: ok
iTunes Library: ok
Airport connectivity: ok
Firewire HD connectivity: ok
Final Cut Pro 3: ok
Web connectivity: ok

So far so good. If all continues good I'll update my desktop G4 1GHz this weekend.

That is all.

Vic Owen December 20th, 2002 12:23 PM

Ken--

Since you have the same G4 tower that I do, I'll be waiting with "baited breath"!

I'm still not convinced I need to make the upgrade yet (DFWI), but I'm watching, watching.....

Happy Holidays

Jeff Donald December 20th, 2002 02:32 PM

I've been using FCP since about 9am est and no problems what so ever. Things seem maybe 10% faster and the video is smoother (Rage 128 improvements?).

Ken Tanaka December 23rd, 2002 04:04 PM

After a clean 3 days with 10.2.3 on my PowerBook I took the plunge today and updated my G4 1GHz DP desktop. So far so good.

iPhoto Library: ok
iTunes Library: ok
Airport connectivity: ok
Firewire HD connectivity: ok
Final Cut Pro 3: ok
Web connectivity: ok
Intuous tablet: ok

Additionally, it seems to have remedied a problem that I (and thousands of others) was having with my HP OfficeJet All-In-One printer. Hallelujah!

Go ahead and jump in, Vic.

Vic Owen December 23rd, 2002 07:38 PM

I quit using HP printers some time back just because they didn't seem to pay nearly enough attention to the MAC drivers. That might have since improved, but they'd already lost me to Epson, and most recently to the Canon SP-900 (a GREAT photo printer!).

I just finished the 2 hour FCP project I was working on, so your timing is good, Ken. I think, over the holidays, I'll pick up Jaguar and make the leap. What the heck, there should be enough egg nog around to make me not care if it doesn't go well!

Thanks for the report.

Happy Holidays.

Jeff Donald December 23rd, 2002 10:16 PM

Nows a pretty good time. MacMall just sent me their after Christmas sale prices. Jaguar is down to About $75.00 after rebates (they end 12/31/02) and the family pack (4 computer license) is around $115 after rebates. The Mac OS 10.2.3 combo update will bring you up to speed.

Jeff

Vic Owen December 23rd, 2002 11:55 PM

Thanks for the tip, Jeff. I moused over to Mac Mall and placed my order -- that's a pretty good price.

Should be here in a couple of days.

Stay tuned.

Vic

One more tip. Follow these instructions http://www.macworld.com/2002/10/features/install/ for the easiest and best way to upgrade.

Jeff

The deals keep coming........

Just received Jaguar from MacMall today, and subsequently saw a post on 2-pop advising that you can now get Jag (thru 12/31) for $89 with a $40 rebate! Pretty soon Steve will be paying us to take it!

Cheers

Apparently Apple's pretty disappointed at the relatively low OS-X adoption rate so far. So it's deal time.

OK, Vic, make a pot of java, print-out the MacWorld recommended dance steps (that Jeff posted above) and ring-in the new year with 10.2.3! (And if it turns you box into a boat anchor don't tell us. <g>)

Ken,

I thought that Apple was going to "force" people to upgrade to OSX, by working with software vendors (i.e. - new versions of software will only run in OSX).

Ken Tanaka December 31st, 2002 10:41 AM

With adoption rates dragging, Apple's having a hard time convincing certain sw developers to convert their products (particularly audio toys). It looks like Apple's new hardball strategy will be that new Macs manufactured after a certain date in 2003 will be unable to boot into OS 9.

Vic Owen December 31st, 2002 06:29 PM

I've been sitting here in the shop staring at the unopened Jaguar box, wondering if the yet-to-be-started projects are relegated to a long wait while I figure out what bad things happened to my MAC......

Actually, I got sidetacked by the bowl games.

:)

Vic Owen December 31st, 2002 06:41 PM

One more thought -- Ken, did you do a clean install?

Ken Tanaka December 31st, 2002 06:52 PM

No, Vic. I actually did an update from 10.2.2. Had no trouble whatsoever.

Vic Owen December 31st, 2002 08:47 PM

OK -- I was thinking of the upgrade from (good old) 10.1.5, which is what I'm stilll running. This will be my first move into the 10.2 arena. I think it was the October issue of Macworld that recommended a clean install to Jaguar.

Matt Stahley January 1st, 2003 07:07 PM

Vic i was in the same boat as you a month or so ago but took the plunge and with t he help from some links from Jeff Donald i did the archive and install on both my G4 and iMac of Jaguar with no problems! Go for it! also the 10.2.3 seems fine so far as well.

Vic Owen January 2nd, 2003 06:11 PM

I'm happy to report that I can still run FCP! The install went pretty well, including the updates from Apple for both Jag and FCP. I had to get a new twain driver for my Epson scanner and reload the Canon SP900 driver, but other than that, it seemed to work OK. I followed the procedures in the October Macworld, and that helped a bunch.

Now, it's on to learning the new goodies. Thanks for the words of encouragement -- when one has a couple of projects yet to be loaded, it tends to make one nervous about the possibility of spending more time getting the MAC back to normal than editing!

Cheers

Ken Tanaka January 2nd, 2003 06:48 PM

Good for you, Vic! Delighted to hear that all's well. Certainly there are hazards for each software update. But on the whole this one has been painless for me and has actually produced true benefits. I think you'll find the same.
