cropping 4:3 into 16:9

I recently finished shooting a stage production with different cameras including an XL2 and an XL1. In the past when I used the XL1 in 16:9, the image was rediculously soft, so I left it in 4:3 and I'm just wondering what the best way to make it 16:9 is.
I taped bars onto the monitor so the operator kept the image in the center of the screen, but what's the best way to make the captured footage usable in a 16:9 project? I'm using FCP5, and I did notice I can add the bars, but is there a setting somewhere that I can just tell FCP to get rid of the top and bottom of the image and just use it as an anamorphic clip like the ones from my XL2?
thanks

yes, thanks
is there a way to do it without adding the clips to the sequence? The only reason Im wondering is because I need to add them to a multi-clip, so would using the methods mentioned and then exporting and reimporting the clips be the best way?

Yes, you can take each clip and change its motion properties and anamorphic checkbox. You could export and re-import if you wanted, but it wouldn't really be necessary.
