FCP moving clips on timeline
 

When I delete a clip in the middle of a timeline, FCP moves all the other clips forward the length of the delted clip - sometimes completely messing up my project's timing. Is this a feature I can somehow turn off?

I don't want everything moving around every time I delete something.

How are you deleting the clip? If you press the "delete" key on a mac keyboard which is where the backspace key is on a windows keyboard then it should not move everything down but if you press the other "delete" key ;) over by home end etc. then that is what moves everything out of the way.

I'm hitting the delete key by the 'home' key. Thanks for that tip!

Now, here are some other things which move my timeline's clips around:

- changing the speed of a clip (increasing the speed of a clip will move all other following clips forward - even those in other video tracks).

- dropping a video clip onto the timeline will move everything back - even when the clip being dropped is in its own video track.

This seems to be a convenience feature that's just more of a pain in my rear. Is there a way to turn it off? Like the way you can turn 'snap' and 'grouping' off?

I don't know how I can say this without sounding short, but it's all covered in the manual.

FCP is deceptively complex. It's easy to figure out to do the basics, but just about any editing operation you could ever think of has been accounted for and there's ways to do about everything.

Depends on how you drop it. Pay attention to the cursor icon as you move it from the top of the track to the bottom. It will change from a down-facing arrow to a right-facing arrow.

To correct the other issue either do what the other Nate says and make sure the arrow is facing down when you release the clip or doulble click your clip to load it into the viewer window then set an in and out point and place your playhead where you want the clip to go and press the little red envelope button which will overwrite whatever is on the timeline (ie empty space) if you do want to move everything down press the yellow button which is insert or as you are dragging hold the option button.

Anyone know how to change the speed of a clip without having every other consecutive clip move around on the timeline?

Sorry try this link http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/podcast/ basically you are doing a match frame to the master file doing your speed change in the browser and then doing a replace edit.
